Jose Canseco accidentally shoots off his own finger

Former Major League Baseball player Jose Canseco accidentally shot his own middle finger while cleaning his handgun at home in Las Vegas on Tuesday, reports said.

According to an account by his fiancée Leila Knight, Canseco was cleaning the gun in the kitchen when the accident happened. Knight said she heard the gunshot and went to the kitchen, and found that Canseco’s finger was dangling from his left hand.

Reports also quoted her saying that doctors told the former slugger that he may never regain full use of his hand.

Knight used Canseco’s Twitter account to send her thanks to all who sent “kind words and prayers.

“Jose is in still surgery and will be ok. Please pray for his finger!!” she tweeted.

The league’s Rookie of the Year in 1986, Canseco hit 462 home runs throughout his 17-year career on teams including the Oakland A's, Texas Rangers, Toronto Blue Jays, Tampa Bay Rays (later known as Devil Rays), New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox.
