China's goldfish beauty pageant draws attention

Listen

A rather fishy competition recently took place in Fuzhou, China.

More than 10,000 goldfishes participated in the “World Goldfish Beauty Pageant” on Thursday for the title of “World’s Goldfish Queen.”

Owners brought in a variety of goldfish for the bizarre contest, including a black-eyed goldfish that somewhat resembled a panda. Some of the fish cost up to 10,000 yuan, equivalent to about 17 million won.

The fish were rated in five categories: features, color, figure, swimming, appearance and general impression.

This year, a red-and-white goldfish with a curly fin at its head won the contest.

The previous goldfish beauty contest took place two years ago. The event raises about 30 million dollars each time it is held.
