Public outcry over Hitler's face on coffee milk lids

A Swiss coffee company is under fire for printing Hitler’s face on their coffee milk lids, according to the Daily Mail.

The controversial coffee creams featuring Hitler and Mussolini were distributed by ELSA, a subsidiary of Switzerland’s largest supermarket chain Migros. However, they were forced to withdraw them from the market after some German businessmen spotted them in a city center café, which later triggered an uproar especially from the German-speaking area of Switzerland.

In Switzerland, coffee cream labels are collectibles, and designers often seek innovative ways to appeal to customers.

Tristan Cerf, a spokesman for Migros explained the mishap occurred when an outside company asked ELSA, a subsidiary of Migros, to supply a series of coffee creams based on vintage cigar labels, two of which featured the dictators Hitler and Mussolini.

He added that normally pleasant images like trains, landscapes and dogs get printed on labels, and this occurrence was an isolated mistake which had nothing to do with the country’s social mores.

He confirmed that the sale and distribution of the Hitler creams has stopped.
