Man lost at sea in a bubble

A man was found floating in the Atlantic Ocean inside a hydro "bubble," U.S. coastguards report.

The man was initially reported to be "disoriented." A week earlier in Florida, he had been asking for directions to Bermuda.

Reza Baluchi had travelled 70 nautical miles east of Florida in his inflatable hydro bubble." said a U.S. 7th Coast Guard District news release.

Drifting off St. Augustine, Florida, with only protein bars, bottled water, a GPS, and a satellite phone, Baluchi had been at sea for three days, before being rescued on Saturday.

“The man was rescued after he activated his personal indicating radio beacon. He was suffering from exhaustion,” the statement said.

The Coast Guard has asked Balunchi to call off his attempted trip to Bermuda, "due to the lack of supplies on his vessel," but he had refused.

His “vessel was monitored until he activated his beacon on the morning of his rescue. The Coast Guard sent a plane and a helicopter, a rescue vessel and a rescue swimmer.

Emergency medical services reported that Baluchi was uninjured.
