'Humans more likely to die on payday'

The average person has a higher possibility of dying on the day of receiving their monthly paycheck, according to a Swedish research organization.

The Institute for Evaluation of Labor Market and Education Policy claims it has found a link between heart problems or strokes and getting one’s paycheck, in its report, “Income receipt and mortality ? evidence from Swedish public sector employees.”

"Our results suggest that an increase in general economic activity on salary receipt is an important cause of the excess mortality," the report said. "The increase is especially pronounced for younger workers and for deaths due to activity-related causes such as heart conditions and strokes."

Studied and written by Elvira Anderssonb, Petter Lundborgc and Johan Vikstrom, the authors state that there is a 23-percent increase in possibility to die on payday, compared to other days of the month.

Gender, drinking quantities, and the day of salary receipt had no correlation to the increase of death rates.

The impact of pay day seems to have a bigger impact on younger people.

While the death rate of people aged between 51 and 66 increased by 29 percent on pay day, that of people between the ages of 16 and 35 jumped 125 percent.

The report was based on studies conducted on about 846,000 public sector employees in Sweden.
