35% of Mexicans don't read single in entire lifetime

People say reading s good for the soul but this is apparently not a belief among Mexicans, 35 percent of whom don’t read single in entire lifetime.

According to a study on reading habits and patterns in 108 countries around the world, which averaged three books per year, Mexico came in in 107th place.

With 35 percent of Mexican respondents saying they do not read a single book, 42 percent said they spend their leisure time watching television.

Reflecting on t he results of the survey, the University of National Autonomy of Mexico said there is an immediate need to increase the number of public libraries and to teach the young generation the importance of reading at early ages.

At present, there is one library for a population of 15,000 in the South American country and federal spending on education remains at $2,933 per student, the lowest among member countries of the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

Similarly, the rate of literacy in Mexico is the lowest among OECD nations.
