Woman serves military term for registering as man

A woman in Taiwan has been forced to serve a one-year military term for having been mistakenly registered as a male at the time of birth.

The incident actually occurred a while back in 1999 as reported by a local media.

Back then, the woman, Wi, received a notice to enlist for military service which is mandatory in Taiwan.

She discovered that she had been wrongly registered as a man and began proceedings for the birth certificate to be revised.

However, the process became extended and she was forced to enroll in a boot camp the following year.

Wi dressed as any other male soldiers and got a crew cut. Considering the unusual circumstances, the military authorities decided to let her out just a little over one year of service.

She recently visited the military unit where she served and said while her memories of the conscription are not pleasant, she has no regrets or grudges for what happened.
