Australian woman cites ghost in after divorce

One Australian woman went to scary lengths to keep her house in a divorce settlement.

A 52-year-old woman told lawyers, a property valuer and a judge that a ghost was haunting the home she once she shared with her husband, according to the South Australia news site Adelaide Now.

She reportedly did so in an attempt to drive down the value of the house, which had been set at $750,000, low enough that she could afford to keep it.

However, both the valuer and the judge reportedly saw through the woman's thinly-veiled intentions.

"I found this account of the alleged haunting to be unbelievable and I am satisfied that the claim was fabricated for an ulterior purpose, namely, as an attempt to influence the valuation of the former matrimonial home," Federal Magistrate Stephen Scarlett said.

The court ruled that the woman could keep the house, so long as she paid $189,000

to her estranged husband.

But this isn't the first time that a scorned spouse has gone to great lengths to keep his or her share of the assets in the divorce.

As part of his 2008 settlement, a Cambodian man sawed the wooden house he once shared with his wife in half.

He took the remaining debris with him to his parents' house nearby and his ex-wife kept the half that was still standing.
