Don’t blame our carefree-lifestyle: angry Frenchmen

The sexual assault charge against Dominic Strauss-Kahn, former head of the IMF, has left many Frenchmen very uncomfortable. The French people feel that the U.S is condemning them all.

As pictures of the French-born international celebrity sitting in court in handcuffs, looking thin and worn out, has been released nonstop by the media, many are dubbing France as “the land of love affairs.”

This has outraged the citizens over there for their culture and tradition of strictly distinguishing public and private life has been ignored and are being deemed as an amoral society by the international viewers.

A foreign correspondent who has long observed the local life in France said that he believe that at times that their free lifestyle is excessive. “I recently met an American diplomat in Paris who claimed that dentists in France are the No.1 tax evaders. A lot of young and beautiful women go there for treatment,” he said.

“Although they have a well-paid job, dentists need another source of money in order to take care of their young lovers. That’s why they don’t pay their taxes.” Everyone nodded their heads in agreement.

The free-spirited private lifestyles of the French have already been made public in Korea through Jean-Paul Dubois’ novel “A French Life.” After reading the many episodes of love affairs written in the book, the word “family breakdown” immediately pops into the mind. If you look around restaurants in Paris on weekdays, it is easy to spot cheating husbands and wives holding their lover’s hand over their meals.

Recently, a news documentary that aired on French TV showed a young women sitting alone at a café being hit on by young French men through a hidden camera. Even though the female tried to resist by saying that she was already married, her admirers all replied with a “so? who cares?”

This so-called Catholic nation seems to have been influenced greatly by the actions of leaders from the past and present. Whether under a French dictator, monarchy, republic, left-wing or right-wing leader, they all enjoyed a carefree sex life.

Former socialist President Francois Mitterrand had a daughter out of wedlock and former president and right-wing politician, secretly left the Elysee Palace at night to spend the night with his Japanese mistress.

Sarkozy, the current president of France, soon divorced his faithful wife for a young woman as soon as he was elected to the post. He got remarried to his supermodel lover who is widely as a ‘Femme Fatale’ for having a relationship with the father and a son of a rich French family.

Many report that this type of no-strings-attached sex life caused the rape case of Straus-Kahn. For a third-person to make this claim may seem like an excessive interference. However, one thing is for sure: former IMF head’s immoral behavior has caused a national harm.

프랑스인들 "왜 우리 性문화까지 싸잡아 비난하나"

도미니크 스트로스칸 국제통화기금(IMF) 총재의 성폭행 미수사건이 프랑스인의 마음을 여러모로 불편하게 만들고 있다. 프랑스인들은 왠지 자신들까지 미국에 비난 받는 기분이라고 했다. 영미 언론들이 프랑스 출신 국제적 명사가 수갑을 찬 채 법정에서 초췌한 몰골로 앉아 있는 모습을 전 세계에 생방송하면서 프랑스도 한꺼번에 '불륜의 나라'로 몰아세우고 있기 때문이다. 프랑스인들은 개인의 사생활과 공인의 공적활동을 엄격히 구분해온 자신들의 문화와 전통은 무시한 채, 영미권의 시각과 도덕적 잣대로 프랑스 문화를 '저질 문화'로 취급한다며 불만이 가득한 표정이다.

현지에서 프랑스식 삶을 지켜본 외국 특파원 입장에서 프랑스인의 자유분방함은 때로 도가 지나치다고 생각되는 경우가 많다. 얼마 전 파리에서 만난 한 미국 외교관은 "프랑스에서 가장 탈세를 많이 하는 직종은 치과의사"라고 했다. 그는 "치과엔 늘 젊고 예쁜 여성들이 교정을 하러 온다"면서, "워낙 돈도 잘 버는 직종이라 다들 젊은 애인이 있어 딴주머니가 필요하기 때문"이라고 설명했다. 농담처럼 한 얘기지만 같이 있던 사람들이 모두 고개를 끄덕였다.

프 랑스인의 자유분방한 사생활은 한국에서도 번역 출간된 장폴 뒤부아의 소설 '프랑스적인 삶'에도 상세히 묘사돼 있다. 책에 등장하는 온갖 불륜 사례를 접하다 보면 '가족해체'란 말이 절로 떠오를 정도다. 평일 날 파리 시내 레스토랑에 가보면, 불륜임이 분명해 보이는 커플들이 식사 내내 손을 맞잡고 뜨거운 눈길을 주고 받는 풍경을 흔히 목격할 수 있다.

얼마 전 프랑스 TV에서 방영한 한 시사다큐멘터리는 젊은 여성이 혼자 카페에 앉아 있을 때 얼마나 많은 남성들이 집적대는지를 몰래 카메라로 생생하게 보여줬다. 프랑스 남자들은 상대가 '유부녀'라고 해도, 한결같이 '그게 어쨌다는 거냐'는 반응이었다.

명색이 가톨릭 국가 국민들의 이런 가치관은 '탁한 윗물'의 영향이 커 보인다. 프랑스 권력자들은 왕정이든, 공화정 시대든, 좌파든 우파든 자유분방한 성생활을 즐겨왔다.

베르사유 궁전의 별궁 트리아농은 루이 16세의 왕비 마리 앙투아네트가 스웨덴 백작과 혼외정사를 즐긴 장소로 유명하다. 나폴레옹 황제의 처 조세핀은 남편이 장교 시절 전쟁터에 나갔을 때 다른 장교와 바람을 피웠다.

사회주의자 프랑수아 미테랑 전 대통령은 혼외정사로 딸을 낳았고, 우파 정치인 자크 시락 전 대통령은 대통령 재직 시절 밤마다 몰래 엘리제궁을 빠져나와 일본인 애첩의 집에서 바람을 피웠다.

현직 대통령 사르코지는 대통령에 당선되자마자 조강지처와 이혼하고 자신이 주례를 섰던 젊은 여자와 재혼했다. 새 부인은 프랑스 명망가 집안의 부자(父子)와 동시에 관계를 맺다 아들과 결혼, '팜므 파탈'(악녀) 별칭이 붙은 수퍼모델 출신이다.

공 인의 사생활에 엄격한 도덕적 잣대를 들이대는 영미 언론들은 스트로스칸 총재의 성범죄 사건에 대해 '프랑스식 성문화'가 낳은 비극이란 시각을 보인다. 타국의 문화를 3자가 단죄하는 것은 지나친 간섭일 수 있다. 하지만 프랑스 출신 국제기구 수장이 '강간범'으로 법정에 서고, 이로 인해 국제적 민폐를 끼치고 있는 사태는 '프랑스식 삶'의 문제점을 되돌아보게 한다.
