At least 27 decapitated in attack on Guatemala farm
At least 27 people were found decapitated on a farm in northern Guatemala on the Mexican border Sunday, and police officials say the killings could be linked to drug gangs operating in the area, a news report said.
"Among the 27 dead were two women. All of them were beheaded," the spokesman for the Guatemalan police, Donald Gonzalez, told AFP.
He added that homicide officers from the national police were on the scene, but they do not yet know when the killings occurred.
If the killings are linked to the Mexican drug cartels, they would be among the largest ever in Guatemala tied to the criminal gangs, the report said.
Police were investigating two possibilities related to drug gangs. The first involved the Mexican cartel "Los Zetas" that operates in the region, trafficking drugs through Latin America en route to the lucrative market in the United States, AFP said.
The second possibility is that the killings were related to the murder on Saturday of Haroldo Lara Leon, a farmer and brother of the late drug trafficker Juan Jose Leon, who was killed by the Zetas gang in 2008, it said.
Haroldo Leon was killed while riding in a truck on a country road with some 250,000 quetzales (around $31,000) cash, money he apparently intended to use to pay his workers. Otzin did not suggest how the murders might be related.
Guatemala already has one of the highest murder rates in Latin America, an average of 18 per day, reports say.
과테말라서 목 잘린 시신 27구 발견
멕시코와의 국경지대인 과테말라 북부 지역에서 목이 잘린 시신 27구가 발견돼 현지 경찰이 수사에 착수했다. 경찰은 이 살인 사건이 이 지역에서 활동중인 마약 갱단과 관련이 있을 수 있다고 말했다.
‘사망한 27명 중 2명은 여성이었다. 27명이 모두 목이 잘렸다’고 과테말라 경찰 대변인 도널드 곤잘레즈가 밝혔다고 AFP 통신이 전했다.
‘경찰청의 살인사건담당 형사들이 현장에 도착했으나 그들은 살인사건이 언제 발생했는지 모르고 있다’고 이 대변인이 덧붙였다고.
만약 이번 살해 사건이 마약 갱단과 관련이 있으면 갱단과 관련된 과테말라 최대의 살인 사건이 된다.
경찰은 마약 갱단 관련 두 가지 가능성에 대해 수사 중이라고 이 보도는 전했다. 첫번째는 이 지역에서 활동하며 라틴 아메리카를 통해 미국으로 마약 밀매를 하는 로스 세타스 갱단이다.
두 번째 가능성은 이 사건이 14일 이 지역에서 발생한 아롤도 레온의 죽음과 관련이 있는거라고 AFP는 전했다. 아롤도는 2008년 세타스의 습격을 받고 숨진 현지 마약왕 후안 호세 후안초 레온의 형제다.
