Elementary schoolchild caught driving bus in China

An elementary schoolchild has been caught driving a bus in China.

Xinhua news agency reported Tuesday that a small boy in school uniform recklessly drove a large bus he commandeered in Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province, early Sunday morning.

The child drove the bus for about 15 kilometers at a speed of 50 kilometers an hour till he stopped and ran away. He caused accidents, such as a crash with a small bus, according to police.

“A large bus was seen rushing to my bus abruptly and then the driver drove the bus away after restarting the engine when I was eating at a nearby restaurant,” said the driver of the small bus and the sole witness. “I thought he was a drunk driver as he was poor at driving.”

Police officers, who traced the bus upon receiving tips, were shocked with what they saw on closed circuit television (CCTV) over the highway. “The driver was a young boy aged about 11,” a police officer said.

“ I returned home after parking the bus along the road Saturday night,” the owner of the stolen bus was quoted as saying. “I don’t know how he opened the bus door since I locked it although the ignition key was in the lock.”

Police investigators are tracing the child’s whereabouts. He is reported to live near the highway where he stole the bus.

버스 몰고 공포의 질주…中초등학생 충격 포착

중국의 한 초등학생이 버스를 몰고 공포의 질주를 벌이는 충격적인 모습이 포착됐다.

중국국영통신 신화통신(新??)에 따르면 저장성 원저우에서 초등학생 교복을 입은 앳된 소년이 지난 10일 새벽(현지시간) 대형버스를 훔쳐 무법질주를 벌였다.

소년은 다음날 아침 버스를 버리고 도망가기까지 약 15km이상을 달린 것으로 드러났다. 시속 50km로 버스를 운전하면서 소형버스를 들이받는 등 교통사고를 내기도 했다.

이 사건의 유일한 목격자이자 교통사고 피해자인 소형버스의 운전자는 “차를 음식점 앞에 세우고 밥을 먹고 있는데 대형 버스가 차를 들이받더니 그대로 시동을 걸고 도망쳤다. 운전이 서툴러서 음주운전자라고 생각했다.”고 떠올렸다.

도난 신고를 받고 범인을 추적하던 수사진은 국도에 설치된 CCTV 영상을 보고 놀라지 않을수 없었다. 대형버스를 훔쳐 무법 질주를 감행한 건 11세 정도로 추정되는 앳된 소년이었던 것.

도난피해 버스의 주인인 두머우 씨는 “9일 밤에 도로에 차를 세우고 집에 들어왔다.”면서 “운전대에 키를 꽂아두긴 했으나 분명히 차문을 잠갔는데 어떻게 문을 열고 들어갔는지 모르겠다.”며 의아해 했다.

담당 수사관들은 버스가 도난당한 지점 근처에 사는 초등학생이 호기심에 차에 올라탔다가 열쇠가 꽂혀있자 그대로 운전을 했던 것으로 보고 소년의 행방을 찾고 있다.
