Legendary turtle in Vietnam infected with skin disease

The legendary giant turtle, which was captured in the polluted Hoan Kiem Lake in the Vietnamese capital of Hanoi, has been confirmed to suffering from a skin disease.

A local daily reported Sunday, quoting the head of the Hanoi Turtle Treatment Association said the turtle has been infected by four species of bacteria.

But the disease is not too serious unlike what was feared earlier in an examination of the reptile through DNA and other checks in the steel water tank 5 meters wide for five days after its capture, according to the head of the association, who is also a veterinarian. The paper said that it is recovering from the skin disease. But the HTTA refused to confirm with what bacteria it has been infected with.

Through the check, the association also claimed that it is quite different from the “soft-shell turtle” growing in Shanghai, the paper said. “The most serious problem is the pollution of the water in the lake,” a veterinarian was quoted as saying.

He said water weeds and mushrooms with strong toxins grow in Hoan Kiem Lake. He added that the turtle is feared to face similar risks when it is released after complete treatment. It will take much time to dredge the lake bed to purify its water.

Meanwhile, the city has prepared another water tank 15 meters long, three times the size in which it has been receiving treatment, so that it can stay during its recuperation. The association estimates that it will require about 90 days to be cured completely.

There are rumors yet to be confirmed that one or two similar-size turtles around the same age are living in the lake.

베트남 '전설거북이' 피부병에 감염

하노이 ― 지난 3일 베트남 수도 하노이의 호안끼엠(還劍) 호수에서 생포된 '전설 거북이'는 피부병을 앓는 것으로 확인됐다.

일간 뚜오이쩨는 하노이거북이치료협회(HTTA)의 부이꽝떼 회장의 말을 빌려 이 거북이가 4종류의 박테리아에 감염돼 피부병을 앓는 것으로 밝혀졌다고 10일 보도했다.

의사이기도 한 떼 회장은 이 거북이를 생포한 뒤 임시로 마련한 철제 수족관(넓이 5m)에서 5일 동안 DNA 조사 등 정밀 검진 결과 당초 우려와 달리 심각한 상태의 질병을 앓고 있지는 않은 것으로 나타났으며, 현재 회복 상태에 있다고 밝혔다. 그러나 어떤 박테리아에 감염됐는지는 언급을 회피했다.

그는 이어 정밀 조사를 통해 이 거북이가 중국 상하이에 있는 자라(soft-shell turtle)와는 전혀 다른 새로운 종이라고 주장한 뒤, "그러나 지금으로서는 가장 큰 문제가 다름 아닌 호수의 수질오염"이라고 말했다.

떼 회장은 또 호안끼엠 호수에는 독성이 강한 수초(水草)와 버섯 등이 많이 서식하고 있다며, 치료가 끝난 이 거북이를 다시 방생할 경우 또다시 위험해질 수 있다고 설명했다. 그는 호수 정화를 위해 준설하는 데는 많은 시간이 걸릴 것이라면서 우려를 표시했다.

한편 하노이 시는 치료용 철제 수족관과는 달리 회복기간에 머물 수 있는 15m 크기의 또 다른 수족관을 마련했다. 이 거북이의 치료에는 90일 가량이 소요될 것으로 예상됐다. 일각에서는 생포된 '전설 거북이' 외에도 비슷한 연령과 크기의 대형 거북이 한두 마리가 더 서식하고 있다는 주장이 제기되고 있지만 아직 확인되지 않았다.
