French spiderman conquers worlds tallest tower

DUBAI ― The self-styled "French Spiderman" braved a strong desert wind to climb the world's tallest tower, Burj Khalifa, in what organizers of the challenge in Dubai hailed as a memorable feat, the AFP reported.

Alain Robert, 48, scaled the exterior of the glass and steel skyscraper which stands 828-meters (2,717-feet) tall, over a seven-hour period on Sunday night.

The climber, whose nickname comes from wearing the outfit of the fictional superhero while conquering the tallest of the tall around the globe, usually works without a safety harness, relying on bare hands and sturdy footing.

But for Burj Khalifa, he used a rope and harness "at the request of the organizers", he told AFP.

Robert, whose feat was part of an "Education Without Borders" conference being held in the Burj, said he took on the latest challenge to serve as "a message of inspiration for students".

It was "a memorable" achievement, said developers of the building, which charges a fee of about $27 for visitors who book in advance to take a lift to the observation deck on the 124th floor.

Robert has climbed more than 100 of the world's tallest buildings, including the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Sears Tower in the US city of Chicago and the 88-storey Jin Mao Building in Shanghai, China.(AFP)

프랑스인 고층 건물 등반가 알랭 로베르(48)가 세계에서 가장 높은 건물인 아랍에미리트 두바이의 부르즈 칼리파를 정복했다.

로베르는 28일(현지시각) 오후 6시께 부르즈 칼리파를 오르기 시작해 6시간 만에 828m 높이의 건물 꼭대기에서 손을 흔들어 정상 정복을 알렸다.

로베르는 안전벨트와 로프에 몸을 묶었지만 맨손과 두 발로 암벽등반을 하듯 금속으로 된 용마루와 유리를 잡으며 건물외벽을 올라갔다.

건물을 오르는 동안 조명을 쏘아 로베르를 비췄지만 땅에서 바라본 로베르는 작은 점으로 보였다.

건물 아래에는 구급차가 대기했고 건물 옆 광장과 주변 식당에서는 수백명이 로베르의 빌딩타기를 지켜봤다.

로베르는 지금까지 미국 뉴욕의 엠파이어 스테이트 빌딩, 시카고의 윌리스 타워, 말레이시아 쿠알라룸푸르의 페트로나스 트윈 타워, 그리고 부르즈 칼리파에 세계 최고층 빌딩의 자리를 내준 대만의 타이베이 101등 70여곳의 고층건물을 정복했다.
