Recycled cereal boxes may be deadly

Listen

German and Swiss researchers have found breakfast cereals, pasta, rice and other foods packed in cardboard boxes could be contaminated with toxic chemicals, the British Daily Mail newspaper reported Tuesday.

The results of both researches, one testing led by Dr Koni Grob in Switzerland and the other done in a government-run laboratory in Zurich, identified the chemicals as mineral oil hydrocarbons. The mineral oils are said to cause the inflammation of internal organs and, if consumed in high amounts over many years, may lead to cancer.

Recycled paper that is used to make most cardboard boxes, appear to leak these deadly oils into the inner packaging.

The products that were sold in supermarkets were found to have between 10 to 100 times the agreed safe limit of toxins.

However, Dr Grob has emphasized that the mineral oils do not pose an immediate threat to health as long as the inner packaging is thicker.

Kellogg’s, as well as other manufacturers, are taking measures to change their packaging methods in order to stop the chemicals from reaching the food.
