Breast is best for Elton John in controversial artwork

With two fathers raising him, Sir Elton John's baby son Zachary is unlikely to be breastfed.

But one artist has contributed to the debate surrounding gay men fathering children by depicting the singer nursing his son.

Irish artist Kevin Sharkey has created Father And Son, a startling image of a busty Elton breastfeeding a young baby - purporting to be two-month old Zachary.

Insisting he didn't mean to offend the pop legend, Sharkey admits he was inspired by the media hype surrounding Elton and civil partner David Furnish becoming parents in December.

“It's set off a new era of gay men having kids. What Elton and David are doing is very admirable.

“I must admit I did have a little laugh to myself while I was doing it but I know Elton has got a good sense of humor.

“It is not meant to be offensive so I hope he sees the funny side of it.”

The two men, who 'wed' in a civil partnership ceremony in 2005, became fathers to Zachary on December 25 through a surrogate. They haven't disclosed which one of them is the biological father.

Sharkey's artwork is on sale at his Dublin gallery for $19,500 with two prospective buyers already showing an interest.

Revealing why he decided to place Elton feeding a baby instead of David, Sharkey explained: 'Elton is definitely the mum in the relationship, where David is more like the strict masculine school teacher.'

A spokesperson for the U.K. Association of Breastfeeding Mothers said Sharkey's piece raised important issues of breast milk for surrogate parents.

She said: 'The painting raises an issue about surrogacy and gay surrogacy in particular.

'It is very important that surrogate children have access to breast milk.

“I don't know if Elton John and David Furnish are doing this but it is very important for little Zac's development.”

모유 먹이는 엘튼 존(?)

두 아버지를 가진, 엘튼 존 경(卿)의 아들 재커리는 모유로 자랄 확률은 낮다.

그러나 한 화가는 남성 동성애자 육아에 대한 논쟁에 참가해 가수 엘튼 존이 제 아들을 젖 먹이는 것을 묘하했다.

아일랜드계 화가 케빈 샤키(48)는 2개월 된 것으로 알려진 재커리라는 아이를 젖 먹이는 풍부한 가슴의 엘튼 존이 묘사된 작품 " 부자(父子) (Father and Son)"를 창작했다.

세계 가요계의 전설적인 이 인물을 불쾌하게 할 뜻은 없었다고 주장하는 샤키는 엘튼과 그의 법적 파트너 데이비드 퍼니시가 12월부터 육아를 하게 된 것이 불어온 언론의 열풍을 보고 창작했다고 고백했다.

“남성 동성애자들이 육아하는 새로운 시대를 출발시켰다. 엘튼과 데이비드는 존경스러운 일을 하는 것이다.

“솔직히 작업을 하면서 혼자서 조금은 웃었지만 엘튼도 재치 있는 사람이라는 걸 알고 있습니다. “불쾌하게 하려고 한 것이 아니니까 재미있는 측면을 봤으면 좋겠다.”

2005년 ‘결혼식’을 올린 두 남자는 서로에게 법적 배우자가 되면서 대리모를 통해 지난 12월 25일 재커리의 아버지가 됐다. 둘 중 누가 생물학적 아버지인지는 아직 밝혀지지 않았다.

샤키의 작품은 더블린에 그의 화랑에서 19,500 달러에 판매 될 예정이며 이미 2명이 관심을 보이고 있다.

데이비드보다 엘튼이 젖먹이는 것을 묘사하기로 한 까닭을 밝히면서 샤키는 “엘튼은 역시 그 관계의 엄마이자 데이비드는 남자다운 엄격한 교사와 더 흡사하다’라고 설명했다.

모유수유협회(Association of Breastfeeding Mothers) 관계자는 샤키의 작품이 대리모와 모유에 대해 생각하는 기회를 준다고 말했다.

“이 그림은 대리모 제도, 특히 동성애자 대리부 제도에 대해 문제를 제기하기도 한다”라고 말했다.

이 관계자는 “대리모의 자식에게도 모유 수유가 가능한 게 중요하다”라며 “엘튼 존과 데이비드 퍼니시는 이렇게 하고 있는지는 모르겠지만 우리 재커리의 성장을 생각해서는 굉장히 중요한 문제”라고 말했다.
