Italian wants divorce after honeymoon accompanied by in-law

Is he a filial son or just a mama boy?

A furious 36-year-old Italian woman, Marianna C., has filed for divorce just a month after her wedding last December, because he had a ‘critical flaw’ not suited for marriage, ANSA news agency reported.

As the couple set off for their honeymoon to France in December, the newly-wed was shocked to find her new mother-in-law at Rome's Fiumicino airport, all set to come on the trip, the agency cited her lawyers as saying.

When she protested, her husband of two days said he couldn't leave his mother alone for health reasons according to court documents. They spent four days together in France with his mother.

However, the woman filed for divorce in a week after they returned from France, citing an "excessive emotional attachment" between her future ex-husband and his mother.

This unordinary reason for divorce got the attention from Italian media and the boot shaped country was hot on debate of whether this is right. In an interview with a local media she said that she decided to file for divorce after seeing his husband attached to his mother even on Christmas.

Meanwhile, a recent study showed that Italy is the land for mama boys as it has the highest percentage, 90 percent, of adult males who live in their parents' home until they marry, according to a study of industrialized countries by Stop Mothering Men (SMM), an international women's group.

The study suggests popular support for the phenomenon among fathers in Italy, once mama's boys themselves.

"If my boy leaves the house and gets his own apartment, he will be all alone," said Pasquale Otto, who resides in Rome under the same roof as his son Roberto, a 26-year-old engineer. "What if he's watching TV and something funny happens on the show? He'll have no one to laugh with."

마리앤느 C.(36)란 이탈리아 여성은 지난해 12월 정식으로 부부의 연을 맺은 남성을 상대로 “결혼생활을 할 수 없는 치명적인 원인을 제공했다.”며 이혼 고소장을 제출했다고 ANSA통신이 전했다.

그녀의 변호사에 따르면 마리앤느는 새신랑과 함께 신혼여행지인 프랑스로 가는 비행기에 탑승하려고 로마 근교 피우미시노 공항으로 이동했는데, 놀랍게도 그곳에는 시어머니가 탑승수속을 모두 마친 채 두 사람을 기다리고 있었다.

그녀가 “신혼여행은 둘 만의 여행이 아니냐.”고 반대의사를 내비쳤지만 남편은 “어떻게 아픈 어머니를 며칠 씩 혼자 두냐.”며 함께 가길 원했고 결국 부부는 시어머니와 함께 3박 4일 동안 프랑스에서 여행한 것으로 전해졌다.

신혼여행을 다녀온 지 1주일 여 만에 마리앤느는 이혼소송을 준비했다. “남편과 시어머니의 감정적 유착이 너무 심해서 정상적인 부부관계를 정립하기 어렵다.”는 것이 이유였다.

평범하지 않은 이혼사유 때문에 이탈리아 언론매체에 소개되는 등 화제가 되자 현지에서도 두 사람의 이혼소송을 두고 찬반의견이 분분했다. 현지 언론매체와 인터뷰를 한 마리앤느는 “신혼여행에서 돌아온 뒤 맞은 크리스마스에서도 남편과 시어머니가 내내 함께 있는 걸 보고이혼을 결심했다.”고 설명했다.

한편, 최근 국제 여성단체인 SMM의 연구에 따르면 선진국 가운데 이탈리아 남성들이 가장 ‘마마보이’스러운 것으로 나타났다. 성인 남성 중 90%가 결혼직전까지 부모와 함께 산다고한다.

이 연구 결과는 한때 마마보이였던 이탈리아 아버지들의 이러한 현상에 대한 열렬한 지지를 보여준다. 로마에서 자신의 26살 아들과 함께 사는 파스켈로 오또는 “만약 내 아들이 따로 집을 얻는다면 그는 혼자가 될 것이다”라며 “그가 TV를 보다 웃긴 장면을 보면 어떡합니까? 그는 자신과 같이 웃을 사람이 없겠죠”라고 했다.
