Faithful canine’s moving vigil at grave following floods in Brazil

Flash-flooding and landslides in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil’s southeast have killed more than 630 people. Amid this, a recent video footage in the press has warmed the hearts of Brazilians.

Underneath the cross lies the dog’s owner, Cristina Maria Cesario Santana, who died in the floods.

As her body was buried in this grave, her pet dog began to keep vigil there. Having unexpectedly lost its owner, the dog may wander the streets but always returns at night to keep watch by the grave.

At one stage the dog scratched at the ground as though having resolved to retrieve its owner.

The dog’s persistence was first reported in the press on Jan. 15, and moving stories of its vigil continued to be reported thereafter.

With fears that the dog too would soon lose its life, people sought the help of Brazil’s animal protection authorities, who rescued the dog, called Leao.

A representative said that at first, the dog refused to eat for a number of days, appearing to be in shock. However, Leao is nowhere injured and has been safely moved to a shelter.

브라질 홍수 사망자 무덤 지킨 충견 ‘감동’

브라질 남동부 리우 데 자네이루 주에서 폭우와 홍수ㆍ산사태로 인한 사망자가 630명을 넘어선 가운데 최근 언론에 보도된 한 장의 사진이 브라질 국민에게 감동을 주고 있다.

사진의 주인공은 포르투갈어로 사자라는 이름을 가진 개. 마치 시골 누렁이 같은 모습의 이 개는 줄지어 무덤자리를 파여 있는 곳 한 구석에 가지런히 앉아 누군가를 지키고 있다. 그 옆으론 외롭게 서 있는 십자가가 보인다.

십자가 밑에 누워 있는 사람은 그의 주인 크리스티나 마리아다.

크리스티나 마리아는 이번 물난리로 사망했다. 수습된 그의 시신은 공동묘지에 묻혔다.

그의 애견이 무덤 주변을 지키기 시작한 건 그때부터다. 졸지에 주인을 잃은 개는 길을 헤매다가도 저녁시간이 되면 꼭 공동묘지를 찾아가 주인의 무덤 옆을 지켰다.

파묻힌 주인을 꺼내겠다고 작정한 듯 한때는 무덤 주변 땅을 파기도 했다.

개가 무덤 곁을 떠나지 않고 있다는 사실이 언론이 처음으로 보도된 건 15일(이하 현지시간)이다. 16일에도 충견의 감동스토리는 계속 언론에 소개됐다.

주인에 이어 충견까지 목숨을 잃을 것 같다며 발을 구르는 사람이 늘어나자 브라질 동물보호당국은 공동묘지로 긴급 출동, 무덤을 지키던 개를 구조했다.

관계자는 “구조 당시 개가 상당히 놀란 데다 며칠을 먹지 못한 듯 허기진 상태였지만 다친 곳은 없어 무사히 보호시설로 옮겨졌다.”고 말했다.
