Smart US dog learns more than 1,000 words

A border collie has learned more than 1,000 words, showing U.S. researchers that her memory is not only better than theirs, but that she understands quite a bit about how language works, AFP reported.

The dog, named “Chaser,” learned the names for 1,022 toys, according to the report.

Study co-author Alliston Reid, a psychology professor at Wofford College in South Carolina, was quoted as saying that she might be able to learn even more words, but her keepers stopped at 1,022 after three years of training simply because of time constraints.

With that repertoire, Chaser has far outpaced another dog, Rico, found by German researchers to be able to grasp about 200 words, according to a study published in 2004 in the journal Science, AFP said.

By the time the pup was five months old, language training began in earnest. Reid was quoted as saying, "Study co-author John Pilley and I would go to second-hand stores and just buy huge numbers of stuffed animals and balls and children's toys and so forth."

이 보더콜리 (양치기견의 일종)는 1천개 이상의 단어를 알고 있어 연구자들에게 기억력이 그들 보다 뛰어날 뿐 아니라 언어가 어떻게 작용하는지에 대해 꽤 많이 이해하고 있음을 보여주고 있다고 언론 보도가 전했다.

체이서'라는 이름의 이 개는 지금까지 장난감 이름 1천22개를 익혀 기억하고 있다고 AFP 통신이 보도했다.

연구를 공동 진행한 사우스 캐롤라이나주 워포드 칼리지의 앨리스턴 리드 심리학과 교수는 체이서가 더 많은 이름들을 익힐 수 있을지도 모르지만 시간적인 제약에 따라 더 이상 가르치지 않았다고 밝혔다고 이 보도는 전했다.

이로써 체이서는 앞서 독일의 연구진들이 진행한 연구에서 단어 200개 가량을 익혀 지난 2004년 학술지 `사이언스'에 논문이 게재됐던 또 다른 개 ‘리코’를 지능적인 면에서 앞지르는 것으로 나타났다는 것.

체이서가 생후 5개월이 되었을 때 본격적인 언어 교육이 시작됐다. “공동 연구 저자 존 필리와 나는 우선 중고 상점에 들러 각종 동물 인형과 공 등 장난감을 다량 구입했다”고 리드교수는 밝혔다.
