Solar eclipse, from space!

The photo was taken with a space telescope on the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) on Oct. 7, released 13 days later, by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), as the new Moon slipped between the Sun and the observatory.

This is the first solar eclipse taken by the SDO on the geostationary orbit of Earth since it was launched last February. The Moon passes between the Sun and the extreme ultraviolet telescope on the SDO.

The observatory circles our planet 36,000 km up. The orbit is tilted so the Earth itself only rarely gets in the observatory’s way as it watches the Sun day in and day out.
