Astronomers say theyve found oldest galaxy so far

Astronomers believe they have found the oldest thing they have ever seen in the universe: It is a galaxy far, far away from a time long, long ago, according to the Associated Press.

Hidden in a Hubble Space Telescope photo released earlier this year is a small smudge of light that European astronomers now calculate is a galaxy from 13.1 billion years ago.

That is a time when the universe was very young, just shy of 600 million years old. That would make it the earliest and most distant galaxy seen so far, the report said.

By now the galaxy is so ancient it probably doesn't exist in its earlier form and has already merged into bigger neighbors, said Matthew Lehnert of the Paris Observatory, lead author of the study published online Wednesday in the journal Nature.

지구로부터 131억광년 떨어진 우주 끝자락에서 은하가 발견돼 가장 오래된 은하의 기록을 새로 세우게 됐다고 유럽 우주과학자들이 발표했다고 국내외 통신이 보도했다.

연구진은 지난 해 허블 망원경에 처음 포착된 작은 빛의 자국으로 131억광년이라는 거리를 밝혀냈다.

131억년은 빅 뱅 후 단 6억년이 지난 시기로, 사람으로 치면 "네 살 먹은 아이"와 같은 단계이며 이 은하는 지금까지 가장 오래된, 가장 먼 은하라고 보도는 전했다.

이 은하는 너무 오래 전에 형성돼 지금은 원래의 형태로 존재할 가능성은 거의 없으며 이미 더 큰 다른 은하들에 흡수됐을 것으로 보인다고 파리천문대의 Matthew Lehnert가 말했다. Lehnert는 20일 네쳐지 온라인에 소개된 이 연구의 선임저자이다.
