Post-Kim Yu-na Shoji thrills Japanese fans

Japan surpassed all other teams during the Junior Ladies Grand Prix of Figure Skating SBC Cup 2010 held in Nagano, Japan, Sept. 24-25. Three of the top eight ladies were from Japan.

Experts were especially excited over Risa Shoji. The 14-year-old overwhelmed all the other skaters and won with 149.39 points, a cool 10-point difference from the runner-up Kiri Baga (138.70) from the United States. Kexin Zhang came third with 134.08. What’s more amazing is that this was Shoji’s international debut.

The Japanese are already calling her “the second Kim Yu-na,” the Korean gold medalist at the Vancouver Winter Olympics in January. Experts say that Shoji’s performance during the freestyle skating was similar to that of Kim’s. Some are going as far as anticipating a gold medal from her in four years time at the Sochi Winter Olympics.

Shoji had placed only 10th last year in the Japan Junior Championship. However, she showed unbelievable growth after she was coached by Naoki Shigematsu and was able to become champion in her first ever international competition. Shigematsu is a four-time Japanese national silver medalist who retired in 2000 and became a coach.

The sensation Shoji is creating in Japan may well be due to Mao Asada’s poor performance. The silver medalist from the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics disappointed fans with her worst performance ever during the first competition of the season.

Asada received 92.44 for her freestyle skating during the Kinoshita Group Cup Japan Open 2010 on Oct. 2. This is the lowest score she has ever received after her debut on the senior stage. She failed 6 of her 7 jumps, including her specialty, the triple axel.

However, Japan not only has Shoji, but also Kanako Murakami, to look forward to. Murakami was the 2010 World Junior Champion and will join the senior stage this year.

"제2의 김연아 나타났다" 일본이 들썩

지난 주말 일본 나가노에서 열린 SBC컵 주니어 그랑프리 여자 피겨스케이팅 대회는 홈팀 일본의 독무대로 끝났다. 무려 3명이 톱 8에 포함돼 일본열도를 들뜨게 만들었다.

전문가들이 가장 주목한 선수는 올해 14살의 쇼지 리사. 국제무대에 첫 출전한 쇼지(149.39점)는 2위인 미국의 키리 베이거(138.70점)에 무려 10점 차의 압승을 거뒀다. 3위인 중국의 장케센(134.08점)도 쇼지의 상대가 되지 못했다.

전문가들은 '제2의 김연아'가 출현했다며 기쁨을 감추지 못하고 있다. 프리스타일에서 보여준 쇼지의 퍼포먼스가 김연아와 거의 닮은꼴이라며 4년 후 소치 올림픽에선 '금빛 연기'를 기대해도 좋을 것 같다는 전망을 내놓고 있다.

지난해 일본 주니어챔피언십에서 10위를 차지한 쇼지는 그러나 시게마추 나오키의 지도를 받은 이후 급성장, 세계무대 첫 출전에서 챔피언을 차지하는 기염을 토했다.

일본이 쇼지에 큰 기대를 거는 이유는 아사다 마오의 부진 탓도 있다. 밴쿠버 올림픽 은메달리스트인 아사다가 시즌 첫 대회에서 최악의 연기를 펼쳐 실망감을 안겨줬기 때문이다.

2일(현지시간) 열린 일본오픈피겨스케이팅 대회에 출전한 아사다는 프리에서 자신의 시니어 무대 데뷔이후 최저점인 92.44점을 얻었다. 장기인 트리플 악셀은 물론 모두 7차례 점프 중 성공한 것은 한 번 뿐이었다.

이런 상황에서 쇼지라는 신데렐라가 탄생했으니 일본이 흥분하게도 됐다.

일본은 쇼지 뿐이 아니다. 세계주니어챔피언십에서 우승한 무라카미 카나코가 올 시즌 부터는 시니어 대회에 참가한다.
