Snowman in space? – wonder by 2 Saturn moons

It looks like a “surreal snowman,” floating in the blackness of space, the Daily Mail in London reported Tuesday.

But this odd image is actually just an optical illusion created as the two moons of Saturn, Dione and Rhea, pass in front of one another. It looks as if they collided with each other.

The Dione, at the top in the image, is actually closer to the spacecraft, Casini of NASA, which orbits Saturn.

Rhea is 1,530km in diameter whereas Dione is smaller at only 1,120km in diameter, or 32 per cent the size of Earth's Moon.

Actually, the two moons are about 500,000 kilometers away from each other, which is compared to 300,000 kilometers between Earth and its moon.

However, because of the similar reflectivity of the two moons and because of the location of a particularly large crater near the south polar region of Dione, the moon appears to blend seamlessly with Rhea.

우주에 눈사람? ― 토성 위성들의 묘기

암흑 같은 우주를 배경으로 ‘초현실적인 눈사람’을 만들어 띄워 놓은 것 같다.

사진 속에서 디오네와 레아는 마치 하나로 합쳐지는 것 같아 신비롭다. 착시다. 충돌이라도 일으킨 것 같다.

사진의 상단에 있는 디오네는 이 사진을 찍은 토성 궤도를 돌고 있는 카시니 위성에 실질적으로 더 가까이 있다.

그래서 지름이 1,530km인 레아와 지를 1,120km이며 달의 32% 크기인 디오네는 크기가 비슷하게 보인다.

그리고 실제로 두 위성은 지구와 달사이 거리보다 좀 더 먼 50만 킬로미터 떨어져 있다.

두 위성이 하나로 섞이는 것처럼 보이는 이유는 각 위성의 햇빛 반사도가 비슷하고 디오네의 남쪽 극지방이 가까이에 특이하게 큰 분화구가 있기 때문이라고 나사는 설명한다.
