Doctor sued for branding name on uterus

A doctor has been sued after he was found to have branded a patient’s first name into her uterus during a procedure.

She found it later on when she was looking over copies of the ultrasound pictures following it.

Ingrid Paulicivic was having a procedure done in an Orange County hospital in California in 2009 by Dr. Red Alinsod. During the procedure the uterus had to be removed, and an electrocautery device was used throughout.

According to the complaint filed, Alinsod used the electrical current to brand the first name of his patient into the organ. His reason? He didn’t want to get it confused with any other uterus lying around his office, and he thought she wouldn’t mind since she “was a good friend” of his.

But Paulicivic says he doesn’t know what he is talking about, and that she had never known him prior to contacting him for the operation. Even if she had, her attorney and other medical sources have confirmed that branding the name into an organ is not regular procedure, nor does it stand with the code of ethics expected of a physician.

They wouldn’t have found out if they hadn’t asked for the pictures from the procedure, which Alinsod was rather hesitant to give them. Only after insisting did they get copies, which the doctor originally claimed he didn’t know how to copy, and then they saw the brand that had been burned in during the operation.

자궁에 전기 인두로 이름 지져넣은 엽기의사

미국 캘리포니아주 오렌지카운티에 살고 있는 40대 여성이 자신의 자궁에 전기인두로 이름을 지져 새긴 산부인과 의사를 고발했다.

잉그리드 폴리치빅(47)은 지난해 6월 자궁적출수술을 받았다. 수술은 성공적이었지만 풀리치빅은 다리 사이에 마치 불에 데인 것 같은 통증을 느껴 이 사실을 알렸다.

수술 집도의인 레드 앨린소드(50)는 그제서야 자초지종을 털어놨다. 수술하기 전 전기소작기(전기인두)를 사용해 환자의 자궁에 '잉그리드'라는 이름을 써 넣었다는 것이다. 순간적으로 고열이 발생하는 기구여서 환자는 다리 사이에 화상을 입은 것으로 밝혀졌다.

의사는 다른 환자들의 자궁과 섞일 것을 우려해 잉그리드의 이름을 전기인두로 지져 새겼다는 것이다.

풀리치빅은 비인간적이고 여성을 모독했다며 강력히 항의했지만 의사는 "서로 친하다 보니 그렇게 했다"고 오히려 자신의 행위를 두둔했다.

떼어낸 자궁은 환자의 이름이 쓰여있는 의료용 타올에 보관하는 것이 원칙이나 이 의사는 아예 자궁에 이름을 인두로 지져 누구의 것인지를 확실히 한 것이다.
