Unidentified object in East Sea presumed to be water mass, or logs; JCS

The military authorities confirmed Wednesday afternoon that an unidentified object spotted in the East Sea was not a North Korean submarine.

“It was not a North Korean submarine,” an officer confirmed.

CBS reported early in the day that the authorities were checking whether or not the object was a North Korean submarine. It was detected in waters 15 kilometers east of Geojin, Gangwon Province, early Wednesday morning.

“A Lynx helicopter detected the unidentified object in waters 15 kilometers off Geojin Port during a patrol there at 7:10 a.m.,” said the Joint Chiefs of Staff in a press briefing at the Ministry of National Defense. “We have confirmed this through a joint investigation.”

“It was believed to be either a dense water mass which appears in specific seasons or floating material in the water,” said a JCS officer.

The dense water mass forms when of seawater currents similar in physical and chemical characteristics meet.

“We dropped some 30 anti-submarine bombs from the patrol ship in the process of identification after spotting ‘the unidentified object’ in the water. Some 10 logs floated to the surface on the scene,” he said.

“There were no other suspect materials or signs detected thereafter,” he added.

8일 오전 강원도 고성군 거진항 동방 15km 해상에서 북한 잠수정으로 추정되는 물체가 발견돼 군당국이 확인작업을 벌이고 있다는 CBS보도와 관련해 군당국은 "북한 잠수정은 아닌 것으로 확인했다"고 밝혔다.

합참은 이날 오후 국방부 기자실에서 브리핑을 갖고 "이날 오전 7시10분쯤 동해 거진 동방 15km해상에서 초계임무 수행중이던 링스헬기가 수중에 미상의 물체가 있는 것으로 추정해 한미 양국이 공동으로 파악한 결과 이같이 확인됐다"고 설명했다.

합참 관계자는 "미상의 물체는 계절적 특성으로 나타나는 수괴(水塊, Warter mass)현상 또는 수중 부유물인 것으로 판단했다"고 말했다.

수괴는 '해양에서의 물리적.화학적 성질이 거의 같은 해수의 모임'을 뜻한다.

이 관계자는 "'미식별 수중 접촉물'을 발견한 뒤 식별조치 과정에서 대잠함정이 폭뢰 30여발을 투하했으며 현장 부근에서 통나무 10여개가 떠올랐다"고 밝혔다.

군당국은 물체를 발견한 직후 비상경계령을 발령하는 등 초동조치를 취했으며 곧바로 링스헬기와 P3-C초계기, 대잠함 등의 전력을 투입해 확인한 결과 더 이상 특이사항이 발견되지 않았다"고 설명했다.
