Ghost shark spotted in Indonesian waters

A startling creature similar to Tim Burton’s “ghost shark” has been found in deep seas off Indonesia.

According to the report by foreign media last week, the shark truly deserves its name because of its pale skin and hollow eyes. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOCC), which succeeded in capturing the photo of the creature, is assuming the shark is a one kind of ratfish, a species that first emerged about 400 million years.

While studying the deep sea ecology near Sulawesi Island, Indonesia, for two months, NOAA researchers succeeded in capturing the photos of around 40 unknown marine species using up-to-date remote controlled equipment on the U.S. marine probe Okeanos Explorer. Conducted in cooperation with the Indonesian Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, the research project is aimed at not only studying marine life but also to solving a growing number of problems in the ocean caused by acidification and overfishing.

‘유령 상어’ 인도네시아 심해에서 포착

팀 버튼 영화 속에나 등장할법한 기이한 생김새를 지닌 유령상어(ghost shark)가 인도네시아 심해에서 포착되어 화제를 모으고 있다.

지난 주 해외 언론을 통해 공개된 바에 따르면 이 유령상어는 이름 그대로 유령처럼 창백한 피부와 퀭한 눈, <프랑켄슈타인> 속 괴물처럼 바늘로 기운 듯한 얼굴 형태를 지니고 있는 것이 특징. 이 모습을 촬영하는 데 성공한 미해양대기관리처(NOAA) 측은 유령상어가 은상어의 일종이며 약 4억 년 전부터 깊은 바다 속에 존재하고 있었을 것이라고 전했다.

약 두 달 간 인도네시아 술라웨시 섬 부근에서 심해 생태계를 연구한 NOAA의 연구진들은 미 해양탐사선 오케아노스(Okeanos Explorer)의 최첨단 원격 조종 장비를 이용해 유령상어 뿐 아니라 학계에 알려지지 않은 해양생물 약 40여 종의 진기한 모습을 포착하는 데 성공하였다.

인도네시아 해양수산부와 공조하여 지속적으로 진행될 예정인 이번 프로젝트는 해양 생물에 관한 연구 뿐 아니라 해양 산성화와 어류 남획 등 날로 심화되고 있는 해양 문제 해결 방안을 모색하기 위한 것이라고.
