Warships made with matchsticks

It’s been more than 60 years since 79-year-old passionate modeler Philip Warren from Dorset, England, met his first love _ none other than warship models made with matchsticks.

Britain’s Daily Mail reported Sunday, “There is a master modeler who has created an armada of every Royal Navy warship out of matchsticks and wooden matchboxes since he was 17,” meaning his armada and he will celebrate their 62nd anniversary this year.

The process of making a model ship on a scale of 1:300 is not simple. On average, around 1,500 matches are used for a vessel, and it takes about three months to complete one.

The skilled modeler has added every little detail to his models using only simple tools such as a razor blade, sandpaper and tweezers. His model warships are no less than the real ones in look. He has even carved numbers in the vessels and stuck flags on every one of them.

Regardless of the work requiring a lot of effort and patience, he now has a collection of 432 naval vessels ­ and has used more than 650,000 matches in total.

Some of his ships are now exhibited at museum, but the painstaking modeler is not interested in making a fortune using the works he spent his whole life on. Through the interview with Daily Mail, Warren said, “Various museum directors have told me the collection is worth a lot of money, but it’s priceless to me and I would never sell it.”

Soon this amazing modeler may have to give up his hobby, because the production of wooden matches is decreasing. However, he is still enjoying his hobby while he can. “It always was and still is very much a hobby. I consider myself a very lucky man that my hobby interests so many people” he said.

"성냥개비로 만든 군함?"…60년간 한 우물판 괴짜 할아버지

60년 동안 성냥개비로 군함 모형을 만들어 온 괴짜 노인이 소개됐다.

영국 일간지 '데일리메일'은 29일(한국시간) "62년간 끊임없이 성냥개비로 모형 군함을 만든 괴짜 할아버지가 있다"며 "노인이 만든 군함은 총 432개로 여기에 사용된 성냥개비만 65만개가 넘는다"고 보도했다.

화제의 주인공은 모둘러 필립프 워런(79). 워런은 17살 때부터 성냥개비를 이용해 모형 군함을 만들기 시작했다. 2차 세계 대전 봤던 군함을 기억해 성냥개비로 모형을 만들기 시작한 것이 지금까지 이어졌다.

공개된 사진 속 군함 모형은 실물과 흡사한 모습이었다. 배의 앞면과 후면부터 본체까지 실제 군함과 똑같은 모양으로 정교하게 완성했다. 워런은 배 하나하나에 깃발을 올리고 번호를 새기는 섬세함도 보였다.

성냥개비 군함을 만드는 건 결코 쉽지 않았다. 한 대를 만드는데 든 성냥은1,500개다. 완성하기까지는 보통 2년 3개월의 시간이 걸렸다. 워런은 "성냥개비를 깍고 다듬는 과정이 가장 힘들었다. 인내심을 요하는 작업이었다"는 소감을 정했다.

워런의 군함 모형을 접한 네티즌들은 놀랍다는 반응이다. 한 네티즌은 "배에 깃발을 올리고 번호를 새기는 등 세심한 부분까지 신경써 실제 군함과 놀라운 싱크로율을 보인다"며 "60년 동안 한결같이 성냥개비 모형을 만든 끈기와 인내심이 놀랍다"고 전했다.
