Messi reluctantly to play in friendly

Lionel Messi, a key player for the Spanish football club Barcelona, will reluctantly play in the friendly against the K-League All Star team to be held at the World Cup Stadium in Sangam-dong, western Seoul, at 8 p.m. today.

The K-League announced this decision in a press conference early Wednesday morning after meeting with Barcelona’s manager Josep Guardiola.

But no details of the meeting were immediately available from either side.

On the previous day, Guardiola abruptly revealed that he would not field the star player on grounds that he would be unable to play throughout the match.

“Messi will not play in the game,” he told reporters. “It is highly probable for him to suffer injuries if he plays in such a condition.”

Fervent local Messi fans were enraged at the announcement.

They are already angry that the Spanish club has left all the World Cup members of the national team at home, including Carles Puyol, Andres Iniesta and Xavier Hernandez. Messi is the sole leading World Cup player, hailing from Argentina.

This time, the club intended to exclude the sole star player from its line-up, which is regarded as an insult to Korean fans who have already paid as much as 110,000 won for the chance to watch those players in action.

“The contract clearly states that Messi must play at for least 30 minutes,” the game’s Korean organizer SportsnStory said, lodging a strong complaint that it is a clear violation of the agreement.

Furious fans are strongly calling for ticket refunds.

바르셀로나의 과르디올라 감독은 3일 기자회견에서 "원칙적으로 메시는 훈련에만 참가한다"며 4일 열리는 K리그 올스타전 결장을 예고했다.

이에 대해 이번 친선경기를 주관한 스포츠앤스토리 측은 기자회견 직후 '계약서 상에 메시가 30분 이상 출전하는 조항이 있다'고 강조하며 메시가 K리그 올스타전에 반드시 출전해야 한다고 주장했었다. 프로연맹의 이준하 사무총장과 스포츠앤스토리 대표는 3일 과르디올라 감독의 기자회견이 끝난 후 바르셀로나의 숙소인 메이필드호텔로 찾아가 바르셀로나 부사장 등 운영진에게 이번 논란에 대한 해명을 요구했었다.

메시가 K리그 올스타전에 출전하게 됐지만 과르디올라 감독이 메시의 결장을 언급한 후 그의 출전이 번복된 것은 이번 친선경기에 큰 흠집으로 남게됐다.
