French mother confesses to eight infant murders

A French nursing assistant Thursday admitted suffocating eight newborn babies because she did not want more children and wished to avoid seeing a doctor for contraception, AFP reported, quoting a local prosecutor.

Dominique Cottrez, 45, was charged with murder Thursday after the new owners of her parents' former home at the weekend found the remains of two newborns buried in plastic bags in the garden as they planted a tree, according to the report.

The skeletal remains of the other six infants were later found dumped, also in plastic sacks, in the garage of the mother's current home, it said.

Prosecutor Eric Vaillant told reporters Cottrez admitted suffocating the infants because after having two daughters "she did not want any more children" and did not want "to see a doctor to get contraception."

Cottrez's husband Pierre-Marie Cottrez was freed after denying any knowledge of the killings.

His wife, whose heavy build appears to have concealed the pregnancies from acquaintances, now faces trial and life imprisonment.

Investigators said she had confessed to suffocating the babies shortly after their births between 1989 and 2006 or 2007, and to concealing the bodies from her husband under household clutter in the garage.

The father told officers he had never suspected his wife was pregnant.

프랑스 북부에 사는 한 40대 여성이 8명의 신생아를 낳아 살해한 뒤 시신을 유기해온 것으로 드러나 충격을 주고 있다.

프랑스 북부 노르주 검찰은 29일 신생아 8명을 낳아 질식사시킨 뒤 시신을 유기한 혐의로 도미니크 코트레즈(45)라는 여성을 구속했다고 현지 언론매체들이 보도했다.

이 여성은 검찰 조사에서 지난 1989년부터 2006년까지 17년 동안 낳은 신생아 8명을 질식사시켰으며 남편은 자신의 임신 사실 조차 몰랐다고 자백했다.

검찰은 남편 피에르 마리 코트레즈(47)에 대해 범죄 은닉 혐의를 두고 조사했으나 아내의 범행 사실을 몰랐을 가능성이 큰 것으로 보고 일단 그를 석방했다.

앞서 경찰은 빌레르 오 테르트 마을에 있는 주택의 주인으로부터 정원에서 사람의 뼈가 발견됐다는 신고를 받고 수사에 착수했다.

조사 결과 이 주택은 코트레즈 부인의 부친이 살았던 집으로 밝혀졌고 경찰은 이 집과 코트레즈 부부가 소유하고 있는 다른 주택을 탐지견을 동원해 정밀 수색해 시신 8구를 찾아냈다.
