Maradona removed from Argentine football team leadership

Diego Maradona has eventually stepped down from the coach of the Argentine national football team.

The Argentine Football Association Tuesday said that his contract would not be renewed after Maradona had said he would only accept the AFA's offer of a new four-year deal through to the 2014 World Cup if his entire staff also remained, the Associated Press reported.

The AFA has been at odds with Maradona about the selection of other coaching staff members. Maradona insisted that the entire staff should remain, while the AFA called for change of assistants, according to news reports.

AFA spokesman Ernesto Cherquis Bialo said that the association “is seeking the successor.” The new coach will lead the team when it compete with Spain on Sept. 9, according to reports.

Among the strong candidate of the new Argentine national football team will be Alejandro Sabella, 56, who headed the team which won the South American Club Championships last year, and Miguel Angel Russo, coach of Raching Club, and Sergio Batista, coach of U-20 national team.

Argentine football fans have supported Madona who showed aggressive play at the 2010 South Africa World Cup although his team was defeated by Germany 0-4, shocking Argentine people.

마라도나 아르헨티나 대표팀 감독 떠나

아르헨티나 축구 대표팀 감독 디에고 마라도나가 결국 사령탑에서 물러나게 됐다.

아르헨티나축구협회(AFA)는 28일(이하 한국시각) "마라도나 감독과 재계약 하지 않기로 했다"면서 "마라도나 감독의 요구조건을 수용하기 힘들다"고 밝혔다.

그간 아르헨티나축구협회와 마라도나 감독은 코치진의 선발 문제를 놓고 갈등했다. 마라도나 감독이 기존 코치진의 연임을 요구한 반면 축구협회는 코치진의 교체를 원했다.

결국 아르헨티나축구협회 대변인은 "마라도나의 뒤를 이를 새로운 감독을 모색 중이다"라며 "오는 9월 7일에 있을 스페인과의 천선전은 신임 감독이 이끌 것이다"라고 28일 발표했다.

현재 아르헨티나의 새 감독 후보로는 지난해 남미클럽선수권대회서 트로피를 들어올린 알레한드로 사벨라 감독, 라싱의 미구엘 앙헬 로소 감독, 세르히오 바티스타 U-20 대표팀 감독이 꼽히고 있다.

남아공월드컵서 독일에 0-4 충격의 패배를 당했지만 아르헨티나 팬들은 뚜렷한 공격축구를 선보인 마라도나를 적극적으로 지지했다.
