NK torpedo produced in Gaecheon 2 years ago: Sankei

The torpedo used in the attack of South Korea’s warship was produced at a North Korean factory two years ago, a Japanese daily reported on July 22.

According to Sankei Shimbun, U.S. intelligence officials informed South Korea and Japan that the propulsion motors of the torpedo had been manufactured at the “January 18th Factory” in Gaecheon, South Pyongan Province, the outcome in an analysis of confidential documents.

The U.S. also notified the two nations of the information in mid-June after the Korean investigation team had presented their results on the incident, the paper reported. In addition, the U.S. confirmed that North Korea had planned to export propulsion motors for torpedoes, excluding the warhead, to South American countries in 2008.

The U.S. intelligence authorities have shown keen interest in the “January 18th Factory,” as it is known to produce engine parts and components of ballistic missiles. Though North Korea has denied its connection to the torpedo attack, U.S. officials judge that “there could no other place where the parts of the same shape are manufactured.”

The investigation team indicted North Korea as responsible for the Cheonan attack after discovering the propulsion motor and steering gear of the torpedo at the scene of the wreckage that matched those on the blueprint of a North Korean torpedo manufactured for foreign export.

미국 정보당국이 천안함 사건에 사용된 어뢰가 “2년전 북한 개천시에서 제조됐다”고 파악해 이 내용을 한국, 일본 등에 전달했다고 일본 산케이(産經)신문이 복수의 일본 정부 당국자를 인용해 22일 보도했다.

이 신문에 따르면 미 국방부 등은 독자 정보망과 북한 내부 비밀자료를 분석해 천안함 침몰에 사용된 어뢰의 추진동력부분을 평남 개천시의 ‘1월18일 공장’에서 만든 것으로 판명했다.

미국은 한국 합동조사단이 천안함 사건 조사 결과를 발표한 이후인 6월 중순 한일 등 관련 국가에 이 내용을 전달했다. 미국은 어뢰의 탄두를 제외한 추진동력부분을 북한이 2008년 남미 지역 국가에 수출할 계획이 있었다는 것도 함께 전했다.

‘1월18일공장’은 탄도미사일 엔진 관련부품 등을 생산하는 것으로 알려져 있어 미 정보당국이 주시하고 있다. 북한은 어뢰 공격 간여를 일관해서 부정하고 있지만 미국측은 “같은 부품, 형태를 만들 수 있는 곳은 달리 있을 수 없다”고 판단하고 있다.

한국 합동조사단은 천안함 침몰 해역에서 어뢰의 추진모터, 조타장치 등을 회수해 북한이 무기수출을 위해 만든 카탈로그에 실린 ‘CHT-02D’ 어뢰 설계도가 일치하는 등을 근거로 “어뢰는 북한의 소형잠수정에서 발사된 것 이외에 설명할 수 없다”고 결론 냈다.
