Mother put on auction site for partner

A Briton has posted the picture of his mother on auction website eBay, in order to help her find her partner after seven years of her divorce, news reports said.

James Doyan, 37, is a management consultant from Crouch End, North London, who wanted to help his mother, Sandy Firth, 63.

The idea came when Firth asked her son to sell a table online. Wanting to reach out on a broader spectrum, Doyan had the idea of putting her up for auction as well with the title "My Yiddish Momma for Sale: Beautiful, Great Cook - Educated, Articulate, Family Focused, Caring, and Priceless."

In his description, Doyan called Mrs. Firth in "used condition" but in "pretty good working order [with] no real defects or signs of wear and tear," and as being "stylish and loves to wear the latest fashions (sometimes forgetting her age) and parades them at any opportunity."

The stated conditions were that potential bidders must be "strong, committed, honest and loyal - over 5ft 10in tall and meet her [Firth's] criteria on being a gentleman."

He affectionately goes on warning, "she is a strong woman - bringing up two kids on her own 30 something years ago was no mean feat and has made her into a fiercely strong sometimes stubborn woman - but always with kindness and generosity at the forefront of her mind (as she is telling you that you are wrong and she is always right)."

There were no bids for this "collectable," as she was listed, but there were 250 views and emails from interested parties. EBay eventually sent a notice that people could not be sold on eBay and the post was taken down before the auction was closed.

제임스는 돈을 위해서가 아니라, 샌디가 남은 인생을 함께 보낼 동반자를 찾아주기 위해 이색 경매를 시작한 것으로 알려졌다.

영국 잉글랜드 웨스트요크셔카운티 리즈 지역에서 시장조사회사를 운영하고 있는 샌디는 두번의 이혼을 경험했다.

지난 2003년 두번째 이혼 이후 좀처럼 데이트를 하지 않고 지내는 자신의 어머니를 위해 애인 찾아주기에 나선 제임스는 이베이에 샌디의 사진을 공개했다. 그는 이 곳에 '샌디가 예쁘고 요리도 잘하며, 교육을 받은 여성'이라고 자랑했다. 또한 그는 샌디가 '의사표현도 확실하고, 가족 중심적이며, 잘 돌봐주고, 매우 소중한 사람'이라고 덧붙였다.

낙찰자에게 자신의 어머니를 인계하겠다고 밝힌 제임스는 샌디가 '스타일리시하고, 때로 자신의 나이를 잊을 정도로 최신 패션을 즐긴다'며 '가끔 고집이 세지만, 보통은 친절하고 마음이 넓은 편'이라고 설명했다.

그는 특히 샌디가 요리를 정말 잘한다며 그녀가 만드는 체리파이는 최고라고 극찬했다.

제임스는 '낙찰자는 강하고 헌신적이며 정직하고 충성스러워야 한다' '키는 5피트10인치(약 177cm) 정도에 샌디의 기준에서 신사인 사람이어야 한다' 등의 조건도 내걸었다.

제임스는 "엄마의 배우자를 찾기 위해 평범하지 않은 일을 하고 싶었다"며 "난 좀 충동적이어서 관심을 불러일으키기에 이베이가 가장 좋은 방법일 것이라고 결정했다"고 설명했다.

이 이색 경매에는 250여명이 관심을 보였으며, 제임스에게 구매 전 미리 그녀를 만나도 되는지 묻는 이메일들이 온 것으로 알려졌다. 하지만, 경매가 완료되기 전 이베이 측은 제임스에게 '사람을 사이트에서 팔 수는 없다'고 알린 후 이 경매를 삭제조치했다.
