Argentine star player says Korea is `fast and dangerous’

As the euphoria from Korea's victory against Greece last week is wearing off, the Korean squad is preparing to face a much stronger opponent, Argentina.

Argentina's key to success lies in its star striker, Lionel Messi. The 22-year-old was chosen as last year's FIFA World Player of the Year, and is often cited as the best young soccer player in the world.

While Messi did not score any goals in the first round match against Nigeria last Saturday, he came close to scoring numerous times against his opponents’ tight defense, and played a major role in Argentina's 1-0 victory.

In a press conference in Johannesburg Monday, Messi described the South Korean squad as a team of fast players. "Korean players are dangerous particularly when they get a hold of the ball," he said.

However, he expressed confidence that his team would win in the upcoming match against South Korea.

"In our group, the only rival is ourselves," he said. "What really matters is how well we perform in the next match. We will concentrate on practicing."

Analysts believe that South Korea should concentrate on isolating Messi from the rest of the Argentine team, since reliance on one star player is one of Argentina's weaknesses.

South Korea's match against Argentina will take place at 8:30 p.m., June 17, at Korean Standard Time.

아르헨 메시 "한국은 빠르고 위험한 팀"

2010 남아프리카공화국 월드컵 본선 B조 조별리그 2차전에서 태극전사와 맞붙을 아르헨티나 대표팀의 '공격 핵심' 리오넬 메시(23.바르셀로나)가 한국 대표팀에 대해 "빠르고 위험한 팀"이라고 평가했다.

메시는 14일(한국시간) 새벽 요하네스버그 프리토리아 대학교 '하이퍼포먼스 센터'에서 치러진 팀 훈련을 끝내고 공식 기자회견에 참가해 "한국에는 빠른 선수가 많다. 볼을 소유했을 때 위험한 팀"이라고 밝혔다.

전날 끝난 나이지리아와 조별리그 1차전에서 공격형 미드필더로 출전해 풀타임을 뛰었던 메시는 경기 내내 폭발적인 드리블과 자로 잰듯한 패스로 아르헨티나 공격의 구심점 역할을 맡았다.

특히 3-4차례 결정적인 골 기회가 있었지만 나이지리아의 골키퍼 빈센트 에니에아마(텔아비브)의 '슈퍼 세이브'에 막히면서 자신의 월드컵 1호골의 기회를 놓쳤다.

19살의 나이로 2006년 독일월드컵 때 아르헨티나의 백업 멤버로 참가했던 메시는 17일 오후 8시 30분 요하네스버그 사커시티 스타디움에서 치러질 한국과 조별리그 2차전에서 자신의 월드컵 데뷔골을 노리고 있다.

메시는 '한국-그리스 경기를 봤나?'는 한국 취재진의 질문에 "우리 경기에 집중하느라 몇 분밖에 보지 못했다"며 "한국에 대한 정보가 그리 많지는 않지만 공수 전환의 속도가 빠른 강한 팀이다"고 설명했다.

그는 그러나 'B조에서 최대 라이벌이 한국인가?'라는 아르헨티나 취재진의 질문에는 "우리의 라이벌은 오직 우리뿐이다. 우리 스스로만 잘 지키면 된다"며 자신감을 숨기지 않았다.

한편 이날 메시와 함께 기자회견에 참석한 스트라이커 곤살로 이과인(레알 마드리드)은 "우리 경기에 앞서 한국-그리스 경기가 열려서 경기 전체를 볼 수는 없었다"며 "솔직히 한국에 대한 정보가 그리 많지 않다"고 어색한 웃음을 지었다.
