Mixed forecast on Koreas fate at World Cup

There are mixed opinions on whether Korea will advance to the second round at the 2010 World Cup, which will start Friday.

British portal Eurosport last Saturday announced its ranking of the 32 participating countries in the World Cup. Among the four in Group B, Argentina has been posted at 7th, followed by Korea (20th), Nigeria (23rd) and Greece (24th).

Sports Illustrated predicted that Argentina and South Korea will advance to the second round. It gave higher points to the Korean team than Greece and Nigeria.

However, others have been pessimistic about the Korean team, saying their prospects are grim. British paper The Daily Mail last Friday reported that Argentina and Greece will go to the last 16. It also added that Argentina will make it to the quarterfinals.

European soccer portal Goal.com made a similar forecast. It said that Argentina will top Group B while Greece will beat Korea to make it to the second round. Gambling site 'Asia Bet' bid the highest money on Argentina and Nigeria, dropping Korea from the survival list.

한국, 16강?… 외신들 전망 엇갈려

영국 스포츠 전문매체 '유로스포트'는 5일(이하 한국 시각) 2010년 남아공월드컵에 출전하는 32개국의 파워랭킹을 발표하면서 한국을 20위에 올려놓았다. 한국이 속한 B조 국가를 보면 아르헨티나(7위)가 조 1위로 16강에 진출할 것으로 점 쳐졌고 나이지리아(23위), 그리스(24위)보다 한국이 높은 순위를 차지해 조 2위로 16강에 진출할 것으로 전망했다

미국 스포츠지 '스포츠일러스트레이티드'도 한국과 아르헨티나가 B조에서 16강에 오를 것으로 예상했다. 그리스와 나이지리아는 각각 조 3, 4위에 그칠 것이라며 한국에 높은 점수를 줬다.

하지만 4일 영국 일간지 '데일리 메일'은 남아공월드컵 B조에서 아르헨티나와 그리스가 16강에 오르고 한국과 나이지리아가 탈락할 것이라는 상반된 전망을 내놓았다. '데일리 메일'은 아르헨티나는 8강까지 오를 수 있을 것으로 예상했다.

유럽축구전문사이트 '골닷컴' 역시 아르헨티나의 조 1위를 확정지은 상태에서 그리스가 한국을 제압하고 조 2위로 16강에 오를 것으로 평가했다. 도박사이트 '아시아베트'는 아르헨티나와 나이지리아에 가장 높은 배당률을 걸어 한국이 16강에 진출하지 못할 것이라 전망했다.
