Al Gore divorces
Al Gore, 62, a Democratic candidate for the 2000 presidential election, divorced his wife after 40 years of marriage.
According to Associate Press on June 1, Gores sent an e-mail notifying their relatives of the decision to end marriage.
"We agreed on divorce after long consideration. We call on [relatives] to respect our decision and privacy. There are no affairs related in any way with our decision," the e-mail said.
Al Gore's spokesperson confirmed that the Gores ended their relationship.
The Gores have been well known as a great couple in U.S. politics. The two met each other during their high school years and married when they were in their early 20s.
The couple was under spotlight when they kissed during the Democratic convention for the 2000 presidential election against George W. Bush.
After the kiss, Al Gore claimed that he loved only his wife, criticizing President Bill Clinton's affair with Lewinsky.
After losing the election, Gore has worked as an environmental activist. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007 and wrote the famous book, "Inconvenient Truth," on climate change.
"Gore was busy doing his initiatives in climate change. He had not spent much time with his wife lately...that might be the reason for their divorce. It feels bad to see them apart," said one who is familiar to the Gores.

미국 민주당의 대통령 후보를 지낸 앨 고어 전 부통령 부부가 40년간의 결혼생활에 종지부를 찍었다.
1일(현지시간) AP통신 등 외신에 따르면 앨 고어부부는 친지들에게 "심사숙고 끝에 이혼을 합의했다"는 내용의 이메일을 보낸 것으로 알려졌다.
이들은 "우리의 프라이버시를 존중해주기를 요청한다."며 혼외정사나 불륜 등의 다른 이유는 없다고 밝혔다.
다정했던 앨 고어 부부의 모습 고어 전 부통령의 대변인도 이들이 이메일을 통해 밝힌 이혼 사실을 확인했다.
그 동안 고어 전 부통령 부부는 고교 때부터 키운 사랑을 대중에 과시하며 미국 정계의 대표적 잉꼬부부로 알려져 왔다.
2000년 대선 후보 지명을 위한 민주당 전당대회에서는 청중앞에서 뜨거운 키스로 화제가 되기도 했다. 현재 이들 부부 사이에는 4명의 장성한 자녀가 있다.
고어 전 부통령은 2000년 대선 때 공화당의 조지 W. 부시 후보에게 재검토까지 가는 접전끝에 패했다.
이후 기후변화 캠페인을 주도하며 2007년 노벨평화상을 수상하고 지구온난화에 관한 '불편한 진실'이라는 베스트 셀러 저서를 출간하기도 했다. 그는 지속가능 투자회사인 제너레이션 인베스트먼트 매니지먼트 공동 창업자이기도 하다.
측근들은 고어 전 부통령이 정계에서 한 발 물러선 후에 왕성한 대외활동을 전개하면서도 티퍼와 따로 지내는 시간이 많았다는 말을 전하며 그들의 파경 소식을 안타까워했다.
