Banker fired for being ’too sexy’

Could an employee be too sexy for the company? Judging by a lawsuit filed by an ex-banker, the answer seems to be yes.

Debrahlee Lorenzana's lawsuit against Citigroup claims that her bosses at the bank's Manhattan branch deemed her "too distracting" for her colleagues because of her attractive appearance, and ordered her to stop wearing turtlenecks, pencil skirts, three-inch heels or fitted business suits.

Her attractiveness seems to be beyond dispute. The 33-year-old is described by the Village Voice as such: "At five-foot-six and 125 pounds, with soft eyes and flawless bronze skin, she is J.Lo curves meets Jessica Simpson rack meets Audrey Hepburn elegance-a head-turning beauty."

Regarding the case, Lorenzana's attorney Jack Tuckner told the media, "It's like saying that we [men] can't think anymore 'cause our penises are standing up…And it's up to you, gorgeous woman, to lessen your appeal so that we can focus!"

Citigroup dismissed the lawsuit as frivolous. "We believe this lawsuit is without merit and we will defend against it vigorously," a statement from the company said. The official explanation for her firing was work performance.

The case will be decided by a private arbitrator, due to a mandatory-arbitration agreement Lorenzana signed at the time of her employment.

빌리지 보이스는 로렌자나가 부드러운 눈빛에 빛나는 구리빛 피부를 지녔다고 전했다. 제시카 심슨의 몸매와 오드리 햅번의 우아함까지 갖췄다고 묘사했다. 데브라 로렌자나는 푸에르토리코인 엄마와 이탈리아인 아버지 사이에서 태어났으며, 푸에르토리코에서 뉴욕으로 12년전에 이주했다고 전했다.

로렌자나는 씨티은행 채용 때 외모로 인한 혜택을 받았다. 씨티은행은 2008년 그녀를 직원으로 채용하면서 연봉을 7만달러나 제시했다. 그러나 그녀의 해고 공식 사유는 규율 문제와 업무 성과였으며, 입사한지 1년만에 벌어진 일이다.
