It is that time of year, the January transfer window. With Korea’s league season starting at the end of February, this is the main opportunity for teams to recruit.
In Europe, however, this is the midseason opportunity to sign new players. This month is notorious for being tough to make good deals, but that doesn’t stop clubs from trying.
There are rumors flying around about who may be going where. The biggest story so far is probably regarding Kim Min-jae.
The defender is in his third season with German giant Bayern Munich after he moved to Bavaria in the summer of 2023, after helping Napoli win the Italian title. At the time, he was one of the most in-demand players in the world. Indeed, he was named as the best defender in the league. It is often forgotten just what an achievement that was.
When he moved to Italy from Fenerbahce, itself an experience, Napoli had not won the title since 1990, a full six years before Kim was born. So, Kim played a major part in changing that and then moved to one of the biggest clubs in Europe. His time in Munich has been up and down.
This season, too, he has not been an automatic starter. This season, he has made eight starts, nine substitute appearances, and missed seven matches and this has inevitably led to suggestions that he could be on the move. And these days, the clubs that are spending most of the money are in the English Premier League.
Chelsea has been linked before and has been once again. The wealthy London club, which became the FIFA Club World Champion last summer, is always active in the transfer market. There has recently been a change of head coach and that often brings a surge in activity.
It is believed that Bayern Munich boss Vincent Kompany wants the Korean to stay. As we all know, it all depends on whether the player wants to go.
Earlier in January, Kim said publicly, "I have never even considered a transfer."
Chelsea has looked vulnerable at the back this season and could do with some reinforcement. After winning the title in Italy and Germany, doing the same in England would complete a special hat trick.
But Chelsea is not going to win the English title this season, so it could be better to wait until the next campaign when new coach Liam Rosenior has had time to put his team together.
At the age of 29, it may be that Kim is getting too old to be of interest to the very top clubs. It may not be a bad thing for the national team if he does not play every single minute of the next few months. An exhausted Kim could struggle in the heat of Mexico in the summer during the World Cup.
Before then, however, he has to focus on helping Munich win another German title and trying to win the UEFA Champions League.
It looks as if there will be more to come, but where that future lies remains to be seen.
