Dos and Don'ts when attending Olympic events

Listen

By Kim Hyun-bin

There are a few dos and don’ts when planning to attend Olympic events in PyeongChang or Gangneung.

Don’t bring tumblers

People formed long lines, up to 700 meters long, hoping for a glimpse of the rehearsal for the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics opening ceremony.

The reason was tumblers, which are used to carry cold and hot beverages. Security had to check each bag for tumblers and other banned items. Tumblers and glass containers are banned as they look similar to explosives and could be quite dangerous when thrown.

All banned items are confiscated on site.

The tumblers that were taken during the rehearsal have been returned to their rightful owners. However, items confiscated during the opening ceremony and other games will not be returned.

Other banned items include knives, scissors, any sharp objects, and all cheering tools that make loud noises.

Do dress warm

The Korea Meteorological Administration predicts the weather to be minus five degrees Celsius to two degrees Celsius during the opening ceremony, but it added the temperature could feel like minus 10 degrees.

The PyeongChang organizing committee advises spectators to bring masks, scarves, gloves, warm coats, boots and other items that could help keep warm. The committee will provide six winter wear items to spectators _ ponchos, blankets, hats and hot packs for hands and feets as well as seat warmers.

Do use Olympic shuttles

Do take advantage of Olympic shuttles around PyeongChang and Gangneung during the duration of the Olympics.

Shuttle buses are available in designated areas around the city including bus and train stations. Personal vehicle access will be restricted near the stadiums during the Winter Games.

Do bring Visa cards

Visa is the official sponsor of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and is the only card that could be used in Olympic facilities.

The rule doesn’t just apply for PyeongChang but in all international Olympic events. If a Visa card is not available, cash is necessary to purchase items at the Winter Games.
