South Korean sprinter Kim Kuk-young ran 100 meters in 10.13 seconds, setting a Korean record.
Kim, 26, broke his own record of 10.16 seconds in the semi-final at the KBS Cup National Athletics Championships in Jeongseon, Gangwon Province, Sunday. He had set the earlier record on July 9, 2015.
Kim will challenge the record in the final at 4:10 p.m. Sunday. He will try to meet the 10.12 qualifying standard for the world championships in London in August.
Kim is one of South Korea’s most promising sprinters. Kim has now broken the national 100m record four times and has improved from 10.31 in June 2010 to 10.13.
He attracted huge media attention on June 7, 2010, by running 100 meters in 10.31 seconds, breaking the Korean record of 10.34 seconds that Seo Mal-goo set in Mexico in 1979.
“I will be able to run faster when the weather gets warmer,” Kim told Yonhap News Agency.
Jamaica’s Usain Bolt set the men’s world record of 9.58 seconds at the World Athletics Championships final in Berlin, Germany, on August 16, 2009.
