Lee Soo-min wins European Tour event in China

Listen

South Korean golfer Lee Soo-min won his first European Tour event in China on Monday.

Lee went wire-to-wire to capture the weather-delayed Shenzhen International at the par-72, 7,145-yard Genzon Golf Club. He's the first South Korean to win on the European Tour since An Byeong-hun won the BMW PGA Championship in May 2015.

Lee picked up three birdies and an eagle against two bogeys and a double bogey for a one-under 71 in the final round, finishing at 16-under 272.

Joost Luiten and Brandon Stone finished tied for second at 14-under.

Lee could only complete 13 holes on Sunday as the play was suspended due to heavy rain, leading to the first Monday finish on the European Tour since 2011.

Lee started Monday tied for the lead, and he quickly charged out in front by three with a birdie on the 16th and an eagle on the 17th. The bogey on the final hole didn't affect the outcome.

The victory in China erased the painful memory of a final round collapse at the Maybank Championship Malaysia in February. Lee entered the final round with a three-stroke lead but committed two double bogeys over his final three holes to finish in a tie for second place, two shots back of the winner Marcus Fraser.

This was only the sixth European Tour start for the 22-year-old.

Lee won a Korean PGA Tour event as an amateur in 2013 and was named the KPGA Tour's Rookie of the Year in 2015, while finishing second in the Player of the Year points race and third on the money list. (Yonhap)
