The Doosan Bears are the 2015 champions of Korean professional baseball.
The Bears convincingly beat the Samsung Lions 13-2 to capture the best-of-seven Korean Series in five games on Saturday. It is the first Korean Baseball Organization (KBO) championship in 14 years for the Bears, and their fourth overall.
The Lions fell short in their bid to win an unprecedented fifth straight title, as three of their strongest pitchers, alleged to have been involved in illegal gambling overseas, were not in the pitching rotation for the series.
The victory at Jamsil Stadium in Seoul must be sweet for the Bears, who blew a 3-games-to-1 Korean Series lead over the Lions two years ago, losing that series in seven games.
Doosan manager Kim Tae-hyung became just the fourth rookie skipper to win the Korean Series.
The Bears pounded out 17 hits and put a runner on in every inning, scoring their first seven runs in the first three innings. Starting pitcher for the Bears Yu Hui-kwan held the Lions to two runs on five hits in six-plus innings.
Designated batter Jung Soo-bin, whose finger was lacerated, went 3-for-5 with a three-run homer and four RBIs for the Bears. Jung was voted the MVP of the series.
The Bears’ cleanup batter Kim Hyun-soo also enjoyed a three-hit day.
