The World Taekwondo Federation’s demonstration team will perform at the United Nations headquarters on Monday, the federation said Sunday.
According to the federation, the team was invited to perform at an event commemorating the 2015 International Day of Peace at the headquarters in New York City.
The International Day of Peace was first proposed by Choue Young-seek, founder of Kyung Hee University in Korea, at the sixth Triennial Conference of the International Association of University Presidents in 1981, and was established in the same year after a resolution was taken. Since then, the U.N. has commemorated the third Tuesday of September every year as an International Day of Peace and it fixed the day on Sept. 21 from 2001.
The theme of this year’s commemoration is “Partnerships for Peace – Dignity for All,” which aims to highlight the importance of all segments of society to work together to strive for peace.
The taekwondo federation’s president, Choue Chung-won, who is son of the Kyung Hee University founder, will make a speech about establishing Taekwondo Humanitarian Foundation, an international non-profit organization aimed at helping children in refugee camps, before the demonstration team perform.
The federation said the team will perform at several other venues including the United States Military Academy at West Point on following days.
