Yeo Min-ji, a star of the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup, received Women's Youth Player of the Year by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) on Thursday (Korean time).
The 17-year-old Yeo led her team to South Korea's first-ever title in a World Cup competition in September by scoring eight goals in six games.
She rose to fame when she swept the Golden Ball and Golden Boot awards for being the best player and the top scorer in the competition.
This is the second straight year that a South Korean player has won a youth award from the AFC. Last year, Ki Sung-yong was named Men's Youth Player of the Year.
"I am very honored and pleased to receive this prestigious award," Yeo said.
"This award will motivate me to work harder in the future. I am looking forward to the AFC U-19 Women's Championship next year and to be invited here again to the awards," Yeo said in comments posted on the AFC Web site.
In addition, Kim Tae-hee, coach of South Korea's FIFA U-17 team, was awarded the AFC Women's Coach of the Year while Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma received the Club of the Year award.
This year's Men's Youth Player of the Year award went to North Korea's Jong Il-gwan.
Teenager Jong was the star of the North Korean team that won the AFC U-19 championship in Zibo, China, last month, scoring a hat trick as his team beat Australia 3-2 in the final. Jong, however, was not present at the ceremony to receive his trophy.
