Korea wins gold in rifle, pistol

The South Korean men's rifle team and its pistol shooter combined for three golds on Thursday, raising their shooting gold tally to 13 at the Guangzhou Asian Games.

The team of Han Jin-seop, Kim Jong-hyun and Lee Hyun-tae put together 3,489 points for gold in the 50-meter rifle three positions event. Kazakhstan had 3,478 for silver and China took bronze with 3,471.

South Korea took the lead in the first position, prone, with 1,190, but China charged ahead in the standing position. South Korea claimed the gold after shooting the best score, 1,161, from the kneeling position.

Han had the highest score in the entire field with 1,169 points. Kim shot 1,166 and but Lee had 1,154.

Han later won the individual three positions title for his third gold medal of the ongoing Asiad. Han shot 100.0 in the final for the winning score of 1,269.0. Kim, who had been the second-best qualifier, won silver after shooting 98.5 in the final for 1,264.5 total.

Han won two gold on Thursday, after helping the 50m rifle prone team win the title on Monday. He is the third triple gold medalist for South Korea, after pistol shooter Lee Dae-myung and swimmer Park Tae-hwan.

Also on Thursday, Park Byung-taek won gold in the men's 25m center fire pistol event. The captain of the South Korean shooting squad here fired 586 points, edging China's Liu Yadong by a single point. Vijay Kumar won the bronze for India with 583 points.
