Korean printer Kim Gook-young, 19, broke the nation's 100-meter record, intact for 31 years, at a national competition in Daegu Monday.
Kim crossed the finish line at 10.31 seconds, cutting the record by 0.03 seconds. He competed in the men's 100m preliminary event at the National Athletics Championships held in the city, 302km south of Seoul.
The previous record was set in 1979 by Seo Mal-ku at the summer Universiade in Mexico.
The world's fastest sprinter Usain Bolt of Jamaica holds the world record of 9.58 seconds.
