Mo Tae-bum Wins Gold in 500m Speed Skating

South Korea's Mo Tae-bum won the men's 500-meter speed skating event at the Vancouver Winter Olympics Monday, bringing home the country's first ever gold medal in speed skating.

Mo clocked in at 69.82 seconds in the 500m event held at Richmond Olympic Oval, nudging out Japanese rivals Keiichiro Nagashima and Joji Kato.

Mo, who turned 21 Monday, stood second with 34.923 seconds in the first run, following Mika Poutala of Finland, but staged a dramatic comeback in the second race with a time of 34.906 seconds.

모태범 500m 금메달

한국의 모태범이 한국 스피드 스케이팅 사상 올림픽에서 첫 금메달을 획득했다.

모태범은 16일 (한국시간) 캐나다 리치먼드 올림픽 오벌에서 벌어진 2010 밴쿠버 동계올림픽 스피드스케이팅 남자 500ｍ에서 1, 2차 시기 합계 69초82를 뛰어 1위로 결승선을 통과했다.

올해 21살인 모태범은 첫 레이스에서 핀란드의 미카 푸탈라에 이어 34초 923으로 2위에 머물렀지만 2차 시기에서 34초 906으로 멋지게 역전승을 이뤄냈다.

1948년 생모리츠 동계올림픽부터 참가한 한국이 스피드스케이팅에서 금메달을 딴 것은 이번이 처음이다.
