S. Korea Grouped With Argentina, Nigeria, Greece

South Korea was grouped with Argentina, Nigeria and Greece in Group B at the draw for the first round of next year's World Cup finals in South Africa in Cape Town Friday.

South Korea, ranked 52nd in the world, opens its World Cup bid with a match against Greece on June 12 in Port Elizabeth before playing against Lionel Messi's Argentina in Johannesburg on June 18. The 2002 World Cup semifinalist will also take on Nigeria in Durban on June 23.

This is the first time since the Mexico World Cup in 1986 that South has not been group with two European teams in the first round.

South Korea avoided the ``group of death'' but will have to face tougher challenges than in the 2006 German World Cup where South Korea fought France, Switzerland and Togo. At that time, South beat Togo 2-1 in its first game, drew with France 1-1 and lost to Switzerland 0-2.

Goal.com said compared to the other seven groups in the first round, Group B can be considered as somewhere in the middle in terms of quality. With the exception of Argentina there are no big-hitters in the pool, but there are also no easy-pickings as all four teams are capable of beating one another on their day.

Argentina, ranked eighth, is a favorite to win its as the team contains a host of world class talent from Lionel Messi and Sergio Aguero to Javier Mascherano and Esteban Cambiasso. But their shaky qualifying campaign as well as their unpredictable coach Diego Maradona means that there are no guarantees on how the South Americans will perform, according to football Web site. South Korea had a record of three losses and one draw against Argentina.

Goal.com said all four teams could realistically finish in fourth place. The most likely battle will be between Nigeria and Greece, but South Korea also has a great chance of qualifying for the second round. These three teams also have very contrasting styles, which should make the clashes between them interesting.

According to Goal.com, although South Korea is an outsider in the pool, its recent performances in the World Cup will give it strength _ they reached the semifinals in 2002 and also drew with France four years ago. Park Ji-sung and the European contingent will need to lead by example.

Nigeria and Greece ranks 21st and 12th in FIFA rankings. Football experts say South Korea will have to defeat Greece in its opening game before having at least one win and two draws.

Meanwhile, North was in the ``group of death'' against Brazil, Ivory Coast and Portugal.

한국이 7회 연속 본선 진출의 시발점이 됐던 1986년 멕시코 대회 이후 조별리그에서 유럽 두 팀을 만나지 않은 건 이번이 처음이다.

조 편성 결과로는 `죽음의 조'는 피했지만 2006 독일 대회 때의 프랑스, 토고, 스위스보다는 조금 험난하다. 당시 한국은 첫 경기에서 토고에 2-로 이기고도 프랑스와 1-1로 비기고, 마지막 경기에서 스위스에 0-2로 덜미를 잡히는 바람에 16강 진출에 실패했다.

골닷컴은 다른 조에 비해 B조는 질적으로 중간 수준이라고 평가했다. 아르헨티나를 제외하고 강한 팀은 없지만, 4팀 모두 상대를 제압할 수 있는 능력이 있기 때문에 쉽지 않은 조라는 얘기다.

랭킹 8위의 아르헨티나는 라이오넬 메시, 세르지오 아구에로, 자비에르 마셰라노, 에스베탄 캄비아소 등 세계 수준의 선수들이 즐비해 2라운드 진출 우선순위에 꼽힌다. 그러나 예선에서의 부진과 예측할 수 없는 디에고 마라도나 감독 등 아르헨티나의 1라운드 통과를 가로막는 악재도 분명하다. 한국은 아르헨티나와 3패1무의 역대 A매치 전적을 갖고 있다.

골닷컴은 4팀 모두 4위로 1라운드를 마칠 가능성은 얼마든지 있다고 밝혔다. 특히 아르헨티나와 나이지리아와 그리스 승자를 2라운드 진출 후보로 꼽았지만 한국도 가능성은 충분하다고 진단했다. 세 팀 모두 대조적인 스타일이라 게임도 흥미진진할 것으로 보인다.

골닷컴은 한국이 비록 아웃사이더이긴 하지만 2002년 4강, 4년 전 프랑스와의 무승부 등 2라운드 진출할 힘은 충분하다고 밝혔다. 박지성과 유럽 진출 선수들이 활약할 것으로 전망했다.

나이지리아와 그리스는 각각 21위, 12위에 올라 있다. 축구 전문가들은 한국이 첫 게임에서 그리스를 이기고 나머지 경기에서 적어도 1승, 혹은 2무를 거두어야 할 것으로 전망했다.

북한은 브라질, 아프리카 예선을 1위 (5승1무)로 통과한 아이보리 코스트, 포르투갈과 `죽음의 조'에 편성돼 G조에서 힘겨운 16강 진출 경쟁을 벌이게 됐다.
