World Press Lauds Yu-na’s Brilliance

Listen

News outlets around the world have praised Kim Yu-na's brilliant performance at Sunday's World Figure Skating Championships.

The Los Angeles Times, one of the U.S. leading dailies, began its analysis story by urging American figure skaters to watch Kim's "Sheherazade" routine before taking to the ice again.

``Every American woman and every American skater can learn something from Kim's seamless meshing of difficult jumps and intricate spins in a program that boosted her overall total to a record 207.71 points, the first woman to surpass 200 since this scoring system was adopted for the 2005 World Championships,'' LA Times said, adding that they should especially note the unruffled calm she displayed in recovering from a sloppy double salchow and finishing her program with supreme confidence.

``They should study the way she expressed so much with her arms and carriage and face, creating a mood that entranced a nearly packed house.''

The New York Times also lauded Kim's spectacular performance, saying, ``For the second night in a row, Kim performed yet another elegant, seemingly effortless routine that enthralled the crowd - and the judges.''

The paper said Kim YU-na grinned when she landed some jumps during her long program. For others, she let her mouth fall open in amazement.

``She aborted one triple jump, then also missed one of her spins, receiving zero points for it. But the rest of her program was performed with such ease, she looked as if she were dancing on a stage in ballet slippers - not skating on a slick sheet of ice.''

``Her short program Friday was just as breathtaking. It was virtually without a flaw and her score showed it. She was given 76.12 points, the best ever for a woman.''
