When world champion and triple Olympic gold medallist Ahn Hyun-soo injured his knee last month, a whole bunch of rivals might have been glad, expecting their players to take the top spot.

However, they must have felt it was a daydream as South Korea's short trackers won two gold medals Saturday at the International Skating Union (ISU) World Cup Short Track in Quebec, Canada.

In the fifth event of the six-event series, Sung Si-bak crossed the finish line first in the men's 1,000 meters in 1.26.445, fending off China's Li Ye with 1.26.772.

Adding another gold to his tally, the 20-year-old, who attends Yonsei University, has won nine gold medals through this season's World Cups.

Lee Ho-suk, 21, won a gold medal in the men's 1,500-meters with a record of 2.18.089.

Compatriot Lee Seung-hoon, 19, came second 0.158 seconds behind.

On the women's side, Jin Sun-yu, who claimed three golds at the Turin Winter Olympics in 2006, started her gold hunt, earning her first podium in the 1,500-meter competition.

En route to her fourth World Cup gold medal, the 19-year-old beat teammate Yang Shin-young _ 2.21.105 to 2.21.416.

Middle-schooler Park Seung-hi, the youngest on the national team, picked up a bronze in the women's 1,000 meters with a 1.34.669 behind Roberge Kalyna of Canada and Radanova Evgenia of Bulgaria.

Meanwhile, American Apolo Anton Ono raced in the men's 1,500 meters, only to be disqualified in the preliminary rounds.
