Police hold counterterrorism drills ahead of APEC summit

Police were set to stage counterterrorism drills against drone and chemical threats Thursday ahead of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit set for next month.

The drills were scheduled to take place in Incheon where ministerial-level APEC meetings will take place next month, mobilizing around 200 personnel, according to the National Police Agency.

The chief of the Incheon Metropolitan Police will take on-site command of the drills, which will be joined by fire authorities and a military chemical, biological and radiological defense unit, among other relevant agencies.

The drills will take place under a scenario of an attempted terror attack utilizing drones against vehicles carrying delegations to the APEC meeting, with officials focusing on evacuation and rescue procedures.

Korea will host the APEC summit in the southeastern city of Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province, between late October and early November.
