Marking its 120th anniversary, Korea University has unveiled an ambitious vision to become an internationally indispensable institution, with a mission to contribute to global progress beyond borders.

In the short term, the university aims to rank among the world’s top 30, while positioning itself as a model institution that addresses pressing global challenges such as climate change, food insecurity, aging populations and social polarization.

"The university has long stood at the forefront of the nation’s development since our founding in 1905, but now, we must expand our role on a global scale by offering tangible solutions to the world’s most urgent issues," Korea University President Kim Dong-one said.

He emphasized that Korea University is a place where global talents from diverse backgrounds come together to tackle the complex issues facing the international community, guided by critical awareness, interdisciplinary thinking and innovative problem-solving.

In line with its ambitious goals, the university is pursuing strategies that preserve Korea’s cultural identity while strengthening its global presence. The university aims to uphold international standards while promoting a unique internationalization model that reflects Korean values.

As part of this effort, the university is developing new academic programs specifically tailored for international students, with a focus on nurturing talent for a rapidly evolving global society.

One such initiative is the newly launched School of Global Entertainment, the first entertainment-focused department exclusively for international students established by a four-year university in Korea. The department, which began in March, aims to train future media professionals who can lead the global entertainment industry, capitalizing on the growing international influence of Korean content and media.

"We aim to foster professionals who will play a key role in shaping the future of the entertainment landscape, as Korean content continues to captivate international audiences," Kim said.

In addition, the university introduced the College of Global Liberal Arts in 2024, allowing international students to explore a range of academic disciplines before declaring a major in their second year.

The university also plans to launch a global convergence studies department, which will offer interdisciplinary education aimed at fostering globally minded, innovative leaders capable of addressing complex challenges facing future societies.

As Korea University expands its efforts to attract more international students, it is also intensifying initiatives to build a more inclusive campus environment, following its declaration in September last year to become a global campus.

The number of international students on campus has surged to 6,240 by the second semester of 2024 from 4,230 in 2023 — a nearly 50 percent increase that underscores the growing demand for foreigner-friendly policies and infrastructure.

To ensure that international voices are reflected in its decision-making, the university holds a task force meeting every two weeks, led by the university president. Foreign students and faculty members take part in the discussions, providing direct input on university policies and campus life in their perspectives.

"We’re committed to making international students and faculty feel like valued members of our community, not merely as visitors," Kim said.

In a move to promote greater engagement in campus life, the university is also working closely with the student council and the university club union to produce English-language guides for student clubs.

In addition, a dedicated broadcasting club for international students has been launched, aimed at supporting student-led media and strengthening participation in student governance and activities.

Meanwhile, Korea University emphasized that changing perceptions among its domestic members is one of the most critical issues in realizing its global campus vision.

"In the past, Korean society placed a strong emphasis on ethnic homogeneity, which often led to a somewhat insular mindset," said Song Sang-kee, vice president for international affairs at Korea University.

"Korea University, too, has traditionally centered its education and research around domestic students for much of its 120-year history," he added. "However, as internationalization has become an inevitable trend, fulfilling the modern role of universities requires a proactive approach to globalization."

Song stressed that efforts to globalize education, research and administration must be accompanied by a broader cultural shift across the campus community.

"It is crucial for faculty, staff and students alike to foster a global mindset — one that embraces diversity, respects differences and puts inclusion into practice," he said.

As part of its global campus strategy, Korea University is placing a strong emphasis on recruiting top-tier international faculty and students. The university is also committed to providing comprehensive support systems aimed at fostering academic excellence across the institution.

"We are committed to creating an optimal environment for learning and research, enabling international members of our community to become convergence-driven leaders who will contribute both to Korean society and the global stage as proud KU alumni," Song said.
